First John 2: 1-6 (1. Don’t sin, 2. Jesus is the advocate, and 3. propitiation 4. Keep Gods word 5. Don’t lie.)
Recap from last time: God is light there is no darkness in him, we can have fellowship with God, by Jesus’ blood cleansing us from all our sin. (darkness and lies and sin).
Intro: Written to show who God is to the readers. And correct misunderstandings. (Knowing who God really is! Changes everything, his commandment are not burdensome but life is found in him and them).
Verse 1. Starts with at personal “greeting” my little children (spiritually), I write so that you may not sin. PPT - (Explain sin missing the mark, breaking God law, against others oneself and God). Missing the mark, and failing to walk as Jesus walked will not lead to life, no matter what lures us to walk the other way, that is one of the reasons that John writes that his joy will be made complete and he writes it in 2 and 3 john, as he hears that his “children” are walking faithfully with Jesus. And not in darkness sin and lies.
But if anyone does sin (like he had just said we do in verse 1:8) we are not lost and utterly cast away from God and without hope. No, because Jesus Christ the righteous is our advocate/spokesperson in royal court (parakletos) PPT and he is with the father. (exalted to the right hand of power in heaven with God) Where Jesus intercedes and remind the perfect holy God that dwells in pure light, that he = Jesus has shed his blood, for the sins we commit. (What if we are loved at our lowest?)
John explains in verse 2 that Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. (Explain propitiation). PPT x 2 – Jesus dies as a sin offering (on the day of atoment) in our place, for wrath against sin, taking our penalty, for filling the sacaficly system, that was shadow, that pointed to the perfect offering, Jesus God’s son, God paying the prize, and sowing his love for us, as God send Jesus. (Some in the west, have a problem with this, they think God is devided and pit Jesus and God against one another and call God the father mean and evil, - It does not make sense, it think, it because people don’t what to acknowledge how bad sin is and that it has consercvenses, rebellion against God, and others, darkness lies, -Oh no we are civilized and scientific, and good people, we are past offerings and violence? Really? What do you by? What to you use time on, worship you phone? Kids? The new whatever? The dream?). All will disappoint, and you will reveal that you are more concrend about yourself that you are functional your own God. No, we despratly need Jesus, that offered him self as he intrusted him self to God. (That might be waliking in light and as Jesus walked).
Not only our sin but the sin of the world/more than that cosmos. As Romans say all creation is growing, ready to be made new / The notion is that Jesus work is so complete so full that all can come… your not out of reach… you did not our sin Jesus work on the cross. – To the others you will never be good enough with out it. But Jesus has provided… so come… daily…
Verse 3 Okay but how do we know we have Jesus? The way we know that we know Jesus is if we keep his commandments. Obey. It is not enough to know all what the bible teaches, and know how Jesus lived, no… we are asked to Obey Jesus words.
This is contrasted to verse 4 that if someone say they know Jesus but don’t keep his commandments he is a liar and the truth is not in him. (Misunderstanding God, and Jesus = sin and lies). But a life growing in understanding of God, and Jesus, by the spirt will let us walk in the light as he is in the light living out our faith, and the teaching of Jesus. We show the love of God is in us (in Jesus) by loving God and people. Jesus 2 commandments. And what John wrote 2 times in the gospel of John if you love me you keep my commandments 14:15 and 15:10.
Elaborating on that verse 5 say, whoever keeps his word, in him the love of God is perfected, made complete. That is the love of God has changed the person, and live in obedience to Jesus comandments, - not perfect without sin but I understanding who God is.
Verse 6 We can know we are in Jesus, and if we love him and abide in him, and we are to walk as he walked. Live life like he did, to glorify God.
So, it is all about my works? No… It is about weather we love God, and understand who God is and what Jesus has done, do we treasure Jesus? As advocate, propitiation, savior, redeemer, lover of our soul, do we see that God has done all to save us from sin, shame, pain guilt, Satan and the just judgment and wrath against sin. We have understood how bad rebellion against God is, that sin and lies lead to darkness, that it is not my works but Jesus works.
John is so kind to remind us that it does matter if we sin, sin has consequences, for us and others in this life, but Jesus’ blood cleanse us from all sin, and we are set free to walk in light as we abide in Jesus, walking like he did.
Therefore, it is not, I will do this and God will give me all my idols, no God has made a way that your idols and sin can be smashed, and instead we trust in God, and walk the way Jesus walked. Walk worthy. If we life our life and walk in away that does not how Jesus walked, we should be warned and encouraged to listen to what John is writing about the Glory of God and greatness of Jesus, and ask the Lord, help me see Jesus as my treasure and live with, in and for him and help me by your Holy Spirt.
It is great news, don’t sin, if/when you do Jesus is there interceding for you and our advocate, saying my blood have covered this sin. That is the good news of the gospel that. Are we living it out, in joy? Walking with Jesus?
Be honest about your relationship with Jesus, - I do it all – I don’t need Jesus (religious) and I can do whatever I want also sin because Jesus is my savior, or I make my own commandments or no commandments.
But John keeps reminding us, about the much better news, that Jesus, is our advocate when we sin, (so we don’t have to hide or excuse, but recvice and glorify Jesus in our confession). And that Jesus commandments are not burdensome, and living out his commandments is a sign that his love has been purred out in our hearts, - not the other way, we do his commandments to prove or win right standing with God. – or say I have no need of Jesus anymore he died for me I live in my own power now.
Let´s instead rejoice in Jesus, come to him, live for him, believe his commandments are good, and in joy and with a cleansed hart live like he did, to glorify God.
