Matthew 2:1–12 CSB
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star at its rising and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born. “In Bethlehem of Judea,” they told him, “because this is what was written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah: Because out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you find him, report back to me so that I too can go and worship him.” After hearing the king, they went on their way. And there it was—the star they had seen at its rising. It led them until it came and stopped above the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overwhelmed with joy. Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and falling to their knees, they worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route.

Picture with me, a vast desert spread out before us.
The scorching sun torches the sand, making each step a struggle.
The only calming respite in this barren landscape is the nighttime sky, filled with a blanket of stars.
It is in this moment, amidst the darkness, that the Star of Bethlehem bursts forth, shining brighter than anything else in the heavens.
Its light is no ordinary light, for it beams with purpose, with guidance, leading the wise men to their destined encounter with the Savior of the world.

1. The Guiding Star

The Star of Bethlehem is not just a random celestial phenomenon; it is a divinely orchestrated signpost in history.
Just as the wise men followed the star to find Jesus, it reminds us that God uses signs and wonders to guide us on our own unique journeys.
When we surrender to the will of God, His guiding star will illuminate our path and lead us to our purpose.

2. The Importance of Faith

The wise men relied on faith to follow the star.
They didn't have all the answers or certainty about where it led, but they had a firm belief in the promise of the Messiah.
Similarly, in our own lives, faith is essential for our spiritual journey.
We must trust God's plan even when we don't fully understand.
Faith fuels our persistence and keeps us moving forward in pursuit of Jesus.

3. The Journey to Seek and Find

The wise men embarked on a long and arduous journey to find the Christ child.
They didn't give up once they encountered obstacles or faced discouragement.
Their steadfast pursuit paid off as they found Jesus and worshipped Him.
Just like the wise men, our journey to seek and find Christ may not always be easy.
But as we press on, we will encounter the divine presence of God and experience His transformative power.

Closing

My brothers and sisters, let us remember the significance of the Star of Bethlehem in our own lives!
Just like the wise men, we must be attentive to the signs and wonders that God places on our path.
We must cultivate faith that propels us to step out and follow Him against all odds.
And let us be encouraged on our journey, knowing that the destination is the magnificent, life-changing encounter with our Savior, Jesus Christ!
