Renew Your Strength in God
Renew Your Strength in God
Introduction (v.1) - David and his men returned to Ziklag.
Problem (vv.1-6) - The Amalekites raided and burned Ziklag and the women, children, and livestocks were taken.
Revenge for what David has done to them.
No one was killed - God’s providence (they are to be sold as slaves)
David and his men wept until there was no strength in them (v.5) a time of desperation!
David was blamed by his men and wanted to stone him (v.6) Who is to blame?
David finds strength in the Lord! (v.6) - the right response to desperation! To go to the one who is sovereign, powerful, and merciful!
Rather than despairing, we can find strength in the Lord. Where do you get your strength?
God’s providence is on time - they are not too late!
Rising Action (vv.7-10) - David inquired the Lord and was told to pursue the Amalekites and rescue their families.
David inquired the Lord - A godly man is dependent upon God’s direction
Contrast with Saul who inquired a spirit medium.
God answered David - God was with David, not with Saul.
David obeyed the Lord and he pursues the Amalekites
Climax (vv.11-15) - David found a dying Egyptian slave who helped them locate the Amalekites.
The Egyptian young man was sick and dying that is his master left him in the wilderness to die. He was still alive when David and his men found him. This is God’s providence!
The Egyptian young man agreed to help David upon a condition that his life will be spared “Swear to me by God (v.15)
What if the Egyptian young man already died when they found him? or what if he did not get sick and dying and his master did not leave him?
Resolution (vv.16-20) - David defeated the Amalekites, rescued all the families, and captured all the livestocks.
David made a suprised attack at dawn.
David brought it all back (v.19) as God had said earlier in v.8 (you will rescue ALL)
There is success when we follow God’s direction.
God’s deliverance is sure!
Conclusion (vv.21-31) David distributed the spoils of war
Problem - wicked and worthless men doesn’t want to share. (v.22)
Solution - David made a decree that all will receive a portion of the spoil - reason “The Lord has given us the spoil, and delivered the enemies into our hand”. (v.23). God is the reason why we were victorious and what we have is because of God!
David sent portion of the spoils to the Israelites. (vv.26-31) which later helped David when he became King. Wise move!
What: God continued to intervene to save David and his people from their enemies by sending him back to Ziklag in time to save his family and the families of his men from the Amalekite raiders.
Why: To show that God is at work in the life of David and that David is fitting to be KING over Saul because he is dependent upon God’s direction and he showed care and concern for the Israelites despite being treated as fugitive.
What can we learn about God here? God continually intervenes in the lives of his people.
God allows trials to reveal our characters and to show that He is a gracious protector and deliverer.
Gospel
David was used by God to deliver his people from impending death! David acted as their savior and deliverer!
In the New Testament, someone who is greater than David came from the Line of David - Jesus!
Jesus delivers us from eternal death! We are lost and desperate because of our sins and we cannot save our own!
27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
Renew Your Strength in God because:
I. God is at work in our trials - God allows trials to test and reveal our characters.
trials are part of God’s work. Think about the stories from the Bible of people God used. He entrusted Job, Joseph, Daniel, Moses, David, Isaiah, Paul, and many others with major trials. Most of the people we remember faced great trials. In fact, we remember them because of how they faced their trials. Had they never faced a major trial, we probably would not know their name.
James 1:2–4 “2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
Trials prepare God’s people for service as they become more dependent upon God.
Do you trust yourself more than God?
Do you get strength from people rather than God?
What is your response when you are in trial? Is their blaming? Do you go to God for help?
Financial / Health crisis - will reveal if you are a good steward of your wealth and body, will reveal your trust and dependence in God.
II. God’s providence is on time - God’s providence is God controlling what happens and when it happens.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 “1 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—”
Ecclesiastes 3:11 “11 He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.”
God has appointed the time of our birth, salvation, and death. It makes me realize that whenever I find myself in a desperate situation, I must wait upon God’s work of deliverance and align my heart to His heart.
III. God’s deliverance is sure - when God told David that he will recover everyone, God made it happen.
Lamentations 3:25–26 “25 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him. 26 It is good that he waits silently For the salvation of the Lord.”
2 Peter 3:8–9 “8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”
Conclusion:
God continually intervenes in the lives of his people.
God allows trials to reveal our characters and strengthen our faith. In those times of desperation, God shows to us that He is a gracious protector and deliverer.
