With the one has that's what I'm a part of writing. So I'd kind of like to get a recruitment caller. You know, I'm hoping to find a few more leaders support our Awana group specifically some adult leaders for our older group to help expand and better minister to these kids and better be available for these kids. And so yeah with the new year coming off here in a minute for the kickoff come off in a few weeks here. I thought you know if I give you a chance to kind of think on it and you know, even if it's not what they want, even if there's a lot of other Ministries out there with kids stuff for adults to write just think on it a bit to have out whether this is something that's in your heart that God has placed there for you to serve because you know yet whether it's kids or adults right we we don't necessarily always know the the impact will have in someone's life down the line right even just A simple little word or just you know, your your word of encouragement at one point in their life can make a massive difference. And so I hope this will help you catch the vision. Thanks.
Thanks a lot lately and my I don't know about you but I was deeply moved deeply deeply moved when I was watching that that video and it brought me back to Sturgeon Lake Bible Camp this summer just speak into primary two kids and we had a account on there for kids to put their questions or was like 40 questions came in very deep questions from eight and nine year olds, like just absolutely floored me and it when you're in a relationship with the kids off when they start to feel comfortable to to ask those questions. And so yeah, thank you so much Liam. Thank you for being faithful in that Ministry or Liam's are kind of homegrown. I want a kid that grew up to become a leader in our church and he didn't ask for this but let's remember to pray for for Liam as he is our commander that God will continue to use them. Psalm 18. I love you. Oh Lord my strength.

a word singing about the Lord but it struck me yesterday in our practice about his hands holding us. The next time we'll sing is called Before the Throne of God. It's an old song sung it lots of times without tears. I couldn't not weep yesterday at the thought that our name is Graven on his hands and says that nausea that has people has their names written on his hands with hands. We work we make living we create things we care for others. We greet others. We show compassion. Well, good morning church. It's an honor to be sharing with you is always some it's good to be here between my Mark is also here. If that's crazy. I didn't expect that. That's what happens when you're gone for a little while. You're a little Jeremiah showed up and kind of rocks are world. I want to say just a huge. Thank you for all of your support as we have transitioned into this role of Parenthood. And for those of you that didn't know actually like the elders are super gracious and gave me some unpaid parental leave as well and summer and so that was awesome to have that time off that I can just focus on my new little family. And so I just want to say thank you guys so much. I'm going to start this morning with a Jeremiah story cuz I'm a dad and I can do that now, so I'm curious to hear for the parents of this year if you've ever had experience like this, so it's our first week home with Jeremiah Wright and we're pretty sleep-deprived. He's fussing in the night. She fed him. He wasn't going back to sleep. And so I'm like walking around.
Leaning up against the hike headboard and then I'm starting to do this and don't do that. But I catch myself again and all the sudden like I looked down and he's not there and it's just like your heart just dropped. So you like all know at all. You can pictures him to smother beneath the blankets and so I just liked your son is God what happened? That's what I hear from the bassinet and I realize like how is a dream like it was so real he was in my arms, but that part wasn't real Duff shaky my wife and tearing the better part was all too real unfortunately. So anybody
Well if you've ever experienced or maybe you have experience with a kid, but if you've been in that spot where you are really intending to do something or maybe it's intended not to do something like fall asleep and then things don't go as planned. I'm going to bet you have something all of us experience, but I also can bet that it's been very frustrating for you. Right? This is the issue that's going to rise in our passage this morning and sleeping is actually part of the story to funnily enough. If you have your Bibles, you can start flipping for Matthew 26 36 have it up on the screen here as well. It's Jesus praying In The Garden of Gethsemane. Randy's been taking us through the Gospel of John and we're just about at the point in the story with this fits in but this particular story isn't one that actually shows up in John's gospel and I didn't realize that until after I started working on it, but. Randy will be glad I want the
Are in the narrative if you haven't been around the last few like me this passage comes then right after Jesus and the disciples have been in the upper room the last supper, right they had like foot-washing. There was a communion thing and then Jesus talking about how he's going to be betrayed. That's think what you guys talked about last week. So that'll happens. And then they're going to leave and go for a walk before Jesus is arrested before that. Betrayal is actually going to happen. That's the part of the story that we're going to jump into here to pick it up in verse 36 has been Jesus came to a place called Gethsemane and he said to his disciples sit here while I go over there and pray and he took with him Peter and a two sons of Zebedee and he began to be grieve in distress. And he said that my soul is deeply grieved to the point of death remain here and keep watch with me. And he went a little Beyond them and fell on his face and prayed saying my father if it is possible to let this cup pass from me yet. Not as I will but as you will and he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter so you men could not keep watch with me for one hour. Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. He went away again a second time. You're saying my father passed away unless I drink it your will be done again. He came and found them sleepy for their eyes were heavy and he left them again. And he went to a third time saying the same thing once more then he came to the disciples and said to them. Are you still sleeping and resting the whole day hours at hand and the son of man is being betrayed into the hands of Sinners get up and going the hold the one who betrays me is at hand.
This is a fairly well-known passage. I think there's lots in here we can look at but as I was praying and thinking and this passage came to mind. The question I had is what is going on with the disciples. What is up with Jesus repeatedly asking them to stay awake and pray and them not doing it. And in a nutshell it's going to come down to this wanting to do something but not being able to write is Jesus. So famously says in verse 41, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I want explore that a bit more and I want to look at what Jesus does here because even in this moment of his own great personal turmoil, I believe he is still functioning in that role of teacher and he's actually modeling the solution to this very problem. So let's start talking about the problem of the disciples are having if you've read the New Testament much. It's easy to hear Jesus say the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak and assume that spirit means holy spirit and flesh with refers to the disciples sinful human nature as in like he's saying, you know, the Holy Spirit wants to help you guys stay awake and pray but you guys in your in a simple fall in cells aren't able to do that. But that's not exactly what Jesus is saying here that idea of spirit flash emerged later and the commentators. I meant all agree that the language Jesus is using here. He's referring to the disciples Spirit. Not the Holy Spirit. So Jesus is actually saying here. There is a part of you of your spirit your will that does want to keep watch and pray but there's another part of you that standing in the way of that. And I think this lines up with what we see happening earlier and Jesus and the disciples evening like Randy talked about last week. Jesus tell the disciples one of them will betray him and they all say no way right? And then they go out for a walk and Jesus tells Peter he's going to deny him. We have Peter's response here in this is Mark 1431. The Peter kept saying insistently, even if I have to die with you, I will not deny you and they were all saying the same thing also, so all of them are saying this You could argue that maybe it's some of them weren't genuine when they said that but Judas aside I don't really know how we can determine that and that's kind of part of the problem isn't it we are complex beings with competing priorities and motivations everyone. I've talked to always resonates with what the Apostle Paul said in Romans 7:15. I do not understand what I do for what I want to do I do not do but what I hate I do. And I think sometimes we we simplify this when we think about the New Testament later writing about Holy Spirit vs flesh and we just do well again, I can't do it. I just need the Holy Spirit and we don't deal with this fact will sometimes it feels like I really do want to but I'm still struggling. I think that's what we see with the disciples here. They had at least some desire to do what Jesus asked. That was genuine on their part. I really believe that but desire alone isn't always enough, right they needed to actually do what he was asking their Master had made a request of them and they weren't able to do in action and obedience are what are ultimately looking for right? I'll be the first one to say that desire is super super important not going to have action without desire it on my wife can tell you how little I eat vegetables. Can I just don't desire to We tend to do what we want to do and avoid what we don't want to do right? But what do we do it to the best of our knowledge we have the desire to do something, but we don't seem to be able to follow through with it. Sync with Jesus shows us here today is that we ask for help from the father. And this is where the disciples problem truly was. I think I think there's two reasons they were struggling to see they needed help. To ask for help. You have to understand where you're at and you have to understand the situation you're in. I think that the disciples had a bit of an over-inflated view of themselves. And if they hadn't fully listening to what Jesus said was going to be coming they weren't ready to ask for help because they thought they were doing great and there was only good stuff coming down the pipe. Just think for a moment about what we read about the disciples in the gospels think back to like James and John asking to be seated at Jesus's right hand or we have the time that disciple shop and they're going to shoot a children away from Jesus and he's just at the start of chapter 26 year. We have the disciples come to Jesus and his woman pouring perfume on him and then like, oh, no, we think we have a better idea. We know what that should be used for. And then there's just like moment where they're all coming and say. Oh, geez, we will never deny you we have got this like it. It's not all the time. But there's definitely the times in this pattern of the disciples thinking we kind of got this weekend. I got this figured out right and I resonate with that. I know it's super easy for me to fall into that spot. He was like why I've been following Jesus for a while. I kind of know what I'm doing, right? It's so easy to start running on my own strength and things that I have it as I am. I really actually taking the time in the world and in prayer and with other believers to seek God and his help or do I just kind of think I've got it and see what I think about myself is going to affect how I asked for help and when I speak. The other thing that I think is Major League in effect with a not we ask for help is what you think is coming but let's say for example safe that you're going to build a backyard greenhouse right get a couple materials go to Building Supply. I talked to Tracy you get what you need to get a couple tools you watch a YouTube video as you can probably do it yourself, right, but if you're going to build like a two car garage, maybe put a lean-to on there like you're probably going to be talking to Darryl getting some like advice from someone who knows what they're doing. I need some help standing walls putting I'm going to ask for help because I know this is a big job. There's a big pot of difficult task coming here cuz I'm going to prepare for that. From the beginning Jesus told the disciples falling him wasn't going to be a walk in the park. There were going to be some big hard things coming. I'll give you just a few passages here. This is Matthew 16:24, 25 Jesus told his disciples whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me sounds like there's going to be some tough work ahead. Then if we look back if this is way back to the beginning in The Sermon on the Mount Jesus, like right, this is their first type of teaching we have and he's saying right off the Hop blessed are you when people insult you persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Sounds to me like he's going to be tough times ahead.
And then enjoy on this one I missed you a little bit Randy's Thunder, but he'll get to this later. Jesus says this the disciples he says if you belong to the world it would love you as its own as it is you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you remember what I told you a servant is not greater than his master if they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. Do all this to say Jesus have been telling the disciples there were difficult things coming in or Jesus told the parable of the sower. They talked about receive falling that initially started so good with soon as the storms come in as soon as things get hard. It falls away and dies. I Jesus said there were going to be people who hear the good news and receive it with joy, but when things get hard the bell and one of the reasons for that I think is that they didn't really look at what they were getting into. They didn't think it was going to be hard and they didn't think that they were going to need help. They had a bit of over inflated view of themselves to In the disciples case to be fair. I think they thought something big was coming. But I think they thought Jesus was going to do all the heavy lifting on the job and you probably heard this before but what they thought was coming was an Earthly Kingdom set up by Jesus one where he defeated the Romans threw them out and he was going to set up a Jewish nation that can be a center of peace and prosperity again. It's all in their mind by this point think where this is at the end of Jesus ministry. They've seen in like killing people like raising Lazarus from the dead teaching. This incredible teaching is changing people's lives like in there might but it's what I Think Jesus really was probably superhuman right with them. He was in a sense. Then think about that superhuman person imagining you to keep watch right and it's like I'm happy to Jesus but I like this whole staying up to watch with you and pray. It's like maybe I can see, you know, you're a little bit off and maybe like some company but Jesus, I'm sure you're fine. But what I think they were forgetting is that it wasn't just Jesus was going to have to face the tough stuff, right? They were going to be tested notice in verse 41. Turn off I got this one or not. I don't think I had them down but that notice who he says to pray for it's not him. He's not say no I'm struggling. I need you to pray for me. If he says pray for yourself that you don't come into temptation. What temptation is he talking about there? We have the benefit of knowing the rest of the story and so we can look back and we can see that the Temptation around the corner for them is going to be the temptation to deny Jesus. Jesus is about to be arrested and if they stand with him, that means they're all going to be going down to The disciple didn't know that's what specifically was going to happen. But Jesus had already told them persecution is coming there is going to be a temptation to deny me. How did the disciples have better prepared for that? What better understanding of themselves and what was coming cuz they have had. Well, here's where we turn our attention to Jesus. Jesus is currently facing his own conflict of desires. He knows the father is asking him to Bear the sins of the world and to be brutally murdered murder, but if there's any other way to atone for the sins Jesus and let's let's do that. But in a sense, it's the reverse of the disciples write the disciples are saying they want to stay up and stand with Jesus and just refill this simple task, but they they don't seem to be able to wear. His Jesus is telling the father. I don't really want to do this and yet in the end we know that he still goes through with it. What's the difference? Jesus came to the father for help. He didn't just try to do it on his own. I believe this is the key to our conflicting desires. This is the preparation we need if you're frustrated by the fact that you can't seem to break out of a sinful habit why you keep falling back into it, or if that you do you have on your heart is burned to go in curved somebody or or share the Goblin and again, you just keep getting stymied. The answer isn't just to try to do more. Try harder on your own. The answer is to come to the father like noticed the difference in Jesus's attitude and how he understood himself to be in if we think back on the gospels again, you're not going to find any of this like, I've got it all figured out. I can do this on my own attitude. I love with Jesus says he says I only do what I see the father doing that was his attitude. It was a total humility and dependents and constantly looking to God you and it's might be funny to think of Jesus has depended on God because we know he was God, but I want to remind you just a Philippians 2:6 and 8 this morning and another famous passage that says Jesus though. He was in the form of God did not count equality was God a thing to be grasped, but he emptied himself taking the form of a servant being born in the likeness of men and being found in human form. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death. That is the key there. Jesus didn't go around playing the God card all the time. Instead he showed us what it looked like you depend on God. That's how Jesus did what he did. He came to the father and the father worked through him. Now what we see in Jesus's life as well is that this wasn't the first time he's going to the father and ask him for Help by Luke tells of Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed Jesus understood who he was and he needed the father and he knew that there was going to be tough times ahead. He knew he was going to be tested and tried.
But what I find so cool in this passage here, we come start to come full circle and come to why were the disciples there this time, right? I really believe that this time. Jesus is trying to teach something that says he often got away and Pray by himself. But this time he brings disciples along with him and it says in verse 39 to that fits like he goes a little way past them to pray but it is very likely that the disciples could still hear what he was saying. I mean, that's probably how we have what he saying recorded and holy spirit could have given it to them. But I think they actually heard him saying this I think Jesus is once again using this real-life opportunity. He's not creating this or fabricating this at to teach them a lesson. But this is where Jesus is at and he's inviting the disciples along with him to see look at how I deal with my struggle. Look what I'm going to do. Jesus had just heard them all saying repeatedly, they're never going to deny them. But he knew them he knew where they were actually at and like the good teacher. He is the kind of show them what they're missing and prepare them for what's about to happen. You know this whole encounter really is another picture of Jesus is love and care for his disciples in his challenges to the disciples. You don't say you men could not keep watch with me for one hour. It's easy to read that and see where that is, honestly and it was harsh he's doing it because he's trying to wake them up to a difficult reality. You need help you don't got this.
I think if we're honest all of us struggle to admit that. I find it. So interesting to to think that if it was only that the disciples fled when Jesus was arrested without this happening between I think they might have been able to justify ourselves and I'm pretty sure I could have been a sense of right they be like I said, I've never denied Jesus but it was as angry mob they caught us off-guard.
But instead Jesus's closest disciples would look back on that night and they would remember that they weren't even able to follow a simple request for your teacher and friend to stay up with him to watch into prey. I guess not to say it was it wasn't a difficult thing either. They had a long week, but still I don't think Jesus is point was to condemn or crush them, but it was simply to show them. You still need some work here. You need to know where to go when you're tired and exhausted and when big things are coming. Yes, you need rest, but first you need the father.
I suspect that night would always be a dark one for the disciples to look back on. But if they could shift their attention from themselves to Jesus, I think there is great. Hope to be found for them and for us right because for in the middle of that dark night in the middle of that trial we see Jesus by the empowering the Holy Spirit able to overcome his conflicting desires and successfully submit himself to the father's will He's not the only one who can the same offer extends to you and I as well, we can come to the father and receive what we need to carry out his will no matter the cost a lot of y'all don't matter what's against us. So I want to just make two points briefly this morning before I close about how practically I can see that happening in. This is going to be a simple reminder. I'm no rocket science here. But have a regular rhythm for connecting with God. If we want to receive the father's help and overcome the conflicting Desires in our hearts. We need to spend time with him and talk with him. It's a Guinness an obvious when it's a simple one, but it's one. I know I need reminding us. Because life happens life gets busy and it if you're looking for practical advice on that. It's easier to connect with God when it's a regular part of our lives, right? And I very specifically use words like Rhythm and regular because I know that life is crazy at times, you know, and we talked about connecting with God and when we talked with that is Christian a lot of people assume we mean like a daily time of Devotion to do in the morning. I'm in my Bible for half an hour whatever and that's not always it right. It doesn't always work. It is easy to get hung up on just a practice is Randy often reminder. Just reading her Bible to check it off. The list isn't the point connecting with God is And I wanted to be a voice remind me this morning to figure out where that can happen. It's not necessarily going to be in that morning time slot. You know, maybe it's going to be that you're preying on the way to work. Maybe it's listening to your audio Bible on the way back. Maybe it's going to be don't say some mornings. I have time to cut a diving deeper other mornings. I'm going to be just kind of praying throughout the day. The point of the whole thing is that God is awesome. And he has everything we need and we were designed to be connected to him and so come to him whenever wherever whatever that looks like. That's what we need. We were designed for You know God absolutely. Here's our Hail Marys and we cry for help in the midst of trouble. He is with us in those time. It can do amazing things. However, I'll save my observation has been that the most significant growth. I've seen God bringing people's live tends to be over time as they're in a relationship with him. And so if you're struggling with conflicting desires or anything else don't despair. Press in keep connecting with God keep asking him for help. I know where I struggle is that it will take a while. I'm having conflicting desires and I prayed once in like, you know, it didn't go away again. Sometimes it's going to there are those times listen to the stories be encouraged. God can do that. Also be encouraged that God can sustain you through that Progressive growth. Sometimes that's what it's going to be here at that's what we are here for is to support one another as we work through those difficult things as we are tested and tried we can encourage one another as well as one of the ways God can work. But first and foremost come to him when I look at Jesus your I know we don't see his rhythm with connecting with God in this exact story. But what I do see is someone in great personal turmoil facing an impending crisis after an insane week and it's in his late at night and they're tired and they don't have support in the place. They go away to spend time with the father. I just know that you know you and I were going to be a lot more likely to do that. If we've been practicing spending time with that father if the regular part of our lives or we taste and see that the Lord is good and we can go back to that. Well drink about living water and be refreshed.
So regular rhythm, there's there's always lots we could talk about when it comes to praying and spending time connecting with God, but I want to just quickly point out one of the thing here. This is the second thing is just how real Jesus was with God right rhythms and realness house lizards Mars for you. But look at how Jesus comes before the father. It says he he fell on his face when he laid himself out prostrate before God that was not a normal prayer position even back then that was a sign of either great reverence or of great like I'm begging you military. battle juice approaches And then look at his words, right? He doesn't just pray your will be done God he tells God where he's at and what he's thinking right in. This is crazy cuz it look like for us thank God. I know you're asked me to this thing. I'm not sure I can do I really would prefer any other way. He's real with God about that and honest and then he doesn't just tell God once twice three times. He's persistent. He said that three times in the short span and that tells me that Jesus was real when he prayed with the father and the Tennessee. I noticed it myself is that went bad things are happening at you like I talk to God about it and if things don't improve after not very long, you know, I start to pull back and I ignored the parable of the persistent Widow and I just kind of stopped talking about those things even though they're still big bruise on my heart. I can tell you that is not going to build connection with God or help you work through their desires of their trials are going to be facing. My curtain is be honest with God tell him where you're actually at he can handle it. He wants to hear it and he wants to help you through it. So don't wait for the next time that you're holding the kid and falling asleep. Don't wait for the next trial or the next time you're caught between those conflicting desires spend time with. The day it real with him. He is awesome. Let him show you just how much he loves you and how he can work in you and through you. I'm at.
Thanks, Josh. I like how you said that there that desire isn't enough. It does take discipline right? I could say what I want to do with Jesus when I can go home and let the day pass by without desires there. But have I taken the time in been disciplined to do it, but it is him who works in us to Will and to do so, that could be the Cry of our hearts. We're going to end with this him number 431. I need thee every hour and number 431 you can stand with us again. Please sweet thing.
