INTRO: In reading the 111th Psalm this week, it goes deep into God’s character, which got me thinking about just who this magnificent God is...

I think alot of people are scared of God, they think God is like that grumpy old man who sits up there yelling “get off my lawn.” Just waiting smash us over the head every time we screw up.

Psalm 111 “Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and merciful. He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the inheritance of the nations. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy; they are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name! The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!”
One thing I need to say before we get started to make clear before we get started , is that you need to know that Jesus is the spitting image of God.
John 14:8–9 “Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
Colossians 1:15 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
10. He Is Merciful
Lamentations 3:22–23 “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Psalm 145:8 “The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
Ephesians 2:4–5 “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Luke 6:36 “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”
9. He Is Patient
“There really ought to be a sign upon my heart Don't judge him yet, there's an unfinished part But I'll be better just according to His plan Fashioned by the Master's loving hands He's still working on me To make me what I need to be It took him just a week to make the moon and stars The sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars How loving and patient He must be 'Cause He's still workin' on me”
2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
2 Peter 3:8 “But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”
8. He Is Holy
God is wholly other!
The holiness of God refers to the unparalleled majesty of His incomparable being and His blameless, faultless, unblemished moral purity
Isaiah 6:1–4 “In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.”
7. He Is Faithful
Dwight Moody once said “The Son of God passed by Mansions and went down into a manger, that He might sympathize with the lowley.”
2 Timothy 2:13 “if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.”
Lamentations 3:22–23 “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; as Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow: blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
6. He Is Good
Nothing good comes except from God and nothing except good comes from God.
John Blanchard
Psalm 145:9 “The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.”
James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
Everything you have in this life was given to from the hands of a good and loving God
5. He Is Compassionate
God is compassionate. This is a word of sympathy. God cares about your situation.
Exodus 34:6 “The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,”
And in the story of the prodigals son it says:
Luke 15:20 “And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.”
4. He Is Changeless
Nothing binds me to my Lord like a strong belief in his changeless love.
Charles Spurgeon
Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Hebrews 6:17 “So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.”
3. He Is Gracious
“The very center and core of the whole Bible is the doctrine of grace.”
Lexham Survey of Theology (God’s Grace)
God freely grants to his creatures good things they do not deserve. The greatest of these goods is Jesus Christ
There is a difference between grace and mercy. God in his mercy does not give us what we do deserve, and God in his grace gives us what we don’t deserve.

Holman Bible Dictionary

Undeserved acceptance and love received from another, especially the characteristic attitude of God in providing salvation for sinners.
Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,”
Romans 6:14 “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”
2. He Is All Powerful
Omnipotent = God is all-powerful
Matthew 19:26 “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.””
Jeremiah 32:27 ““Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?”
It is impossible for that man to despair who remembers that his Helper is omnipotent.
Jeremy Taylor (Anglican Bishop and Writer)
Omniscient = God is all knowing
to have unlimited knowledge.
Do you realize that the future is already history to God?
Matthew 6:8For your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
1 John 3:20 “for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.”
Omnipresent = God is present everywhere
God does not keep office hours.
A. W. Tozer
Psalm 33:13–14 “The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth,”
Colossians 1:17 “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
11  For all his power, Satan is neither omnipotent, omniscient, nor omnipresent. His power has limitations, and he can only act within the limits imposed upon him by God. God is greater than Satan and his evil, which will never be able to separate Christians from God’s love.

He Is Love
1 John 4:16 “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”
Romans 5:8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
I want you to really think about that...
Really meditate on this verse today ...
God loves us; not because we are loveable but because he is love; not because he needs to receive but because he delights to give.
C. S. Lewis
