Key Question: What is the source of my comfort and strength?
We Are Encouraged by God’s Otherness and Closeness. (V. 1-3)

The transcendence we believe in is not the transcendence of deism and the immanence we believe in is not the immanence of pantheism. In the case of deism transcendence virtually means separation while in the case of pantheism immanence virtually means identification.
Cornelius Van Til
The night of visions is ending the way it started. Zechariah is being told that God is the one who reigns over human history.
The armies of heaven, in all their power, are a perfect picture of God’s otherness; His transcendence. The fact that He reaches to the Zechariah is a display of God’s closeness; His immanence.
The great comfort is knowledge that God is who He says He is.
Our Comfort is that God Will Conquer His Adversaries. (V. 4-8)

Horses and chariots” reflect the strength and monopoly of arms that are necessary and available for the maintenance of the economic and political monopoly.

Like Zechariah, we are shown that God is the one who will intervene on behalf of His children to secure, protect, and redeem us both now and eternally.
As God dealt with the Babylonian, Persian, Greek, and Roman empires; God will continue to deal with all the powers and empires of the world in regards to how they respond to Him and how they uphold truth.
God is making clear to Zechariah that he will restore the people to the Promised Land, while also showcasing that God’s power is capable of granting ultimate deliverance for all eternity.
GOD Displays His Power in Restoring Order and Worship. (V. 9-11)
GOD Displays His Power in Restoring Order and Worship. (V. 9-11)
While God wants us to worship Him we cannot worship Him just any way we will. The One who made us to worship Him has decreed how we shall worship Him. He accepts only the worship which He Himself has decreed.16

The representatives of the Judahite community are represented to give the silver and gold that is to become an ornate crown. The two metals displaying the rule of earth and the purity of God and eternal power.
The focal point is radically different, as Zerubbabel is not crowned, but Joshua is the representative that points to a Divine King and a Royal Priest, both offices residing in the same person.
God is pointing to the importance and centrality of worship in all of life for those who surrender their lives to call Him Savior and Lord.
The Offices of Priest and King Will Be United in the Promised One. (V. 12-15)

A successful preacher wears two crowns: a crown of righteousness in heaven and a crown of rejoicing here upon earth.
Thomas Watson
God is showing Zechariah that Joshua is pointing to the ultimate deliverer God has purposed from eternity past to eternity future.
God is showing the People of Judah that there is still hope for a Davidic King that will share both the Priestly and Royal functions for the people.
Because Jesus completely and perfectly fulfills these offices, we have a great sense of certainty and hope for the world’s changing nature, and our eternal life alongside God.

Those who have the new Jerusalem in their eye must have the ways that lead to it in their heart.
Matthew Henry (Nonconformist Biblical Exegete)
As we journey on as disciples, God’s character is to be our source of comfort and strength.
We rest in the truth that our fellow men are not enemies but a mission field for the Church.
Order and Worship matter because these reflect God’s holiness.
We have our total hope and strength in the perfect Priest, Prophet, and King—Jesus Christ.
