James 1:19- 21

Input Determines Output

We are more formed by the world than we realize. Inputs determine the output.
listen fully, then respond quickly.
slow to speak means i don’t respond immediately and i keep listening until they are finished and i understand…AND not OR until i understand.
24 hr rule
don’t speak until you get God’s perspective and wise counsel.
Often our first inclination to respond is wordly (see anger).
Slow to anger.
anger usually is a result of unhealed pain or unsurrendered idols.
But we need our minds renewed and actions filtered by teaching and presence of Jesus…then act accordingly.
illus: 5 questions from deeply formed life…Rich offers a series of questions to help navigate the debilitating reactions we often have when we are under stress:
a) What happened?
b) What am I feeling?
c) What is the story I’m telling myself?
d) What does the gospel say?
e) What counter-instinctual action is needed?
What has God said?
ὑποδέχομαι (hypodechomai). vb. to receive, accept, welcome. In certain contexts, this family of verbs can be used to describe a “welcome” that entails a larger sense of hospitality.
have you welcomed God’s word to live and have residence in your heart/mind?
or is His word like a person at the door, you listen to their opening pitch act interested, only to send them away uninterested?

James 1:22-25

Look in the Mirror.

The words of James echo the words of Jesus in Mat 7 …doing and practicing the teachings.
illus: lighted mirror..like God’s word, reflects accurately and illuminates and removes shadows for clarity.
being self-deceived is more dangerous than being ignorant…we end up weaponizing what was meant to cut our hearts.
being around people with a relationship with God, doesn’t mean you have one. Being around the bible, isn’t the same as reading it for yourself. (so many are growing in your relationship to God because you’re actually reading it and learning it with the bible recap.)
Forgetting what you need to remember is how we end up living in deception…and the generation after, gets it worse, redefining God, morality, and life in unbiblical ways.
James remembers a time when it wasn’t so good for God’s people.
the crash and loss of favor and blessing of God because of self-deception are the fruit of the warning in Deut 6 (end) and the results seen in Judges 2:11-15.

Judges 2:11–15
We need reminders or we forget and then remember incorrectly.

James 1:26-27

Output Reveals & Reinforces Input

If you can’t control your mouth and how you talk, you cannot control your life. Its an indication you don’t have the fruit of the Spirit growing in you. It may be dormant, but it aint growing
Words, shape thoughts; thoughts influence heart. heart directs your life.
this is not about manifesting your own destiny…it’s about taking inventory of your hearts condition. its about identifying who is LORD in your life. You or God.
3152. μάταιος mataiŏs, mat´-ah-yos; worthless, fruitless, empty, profitless, or (spec.) an idol:—vain,
the problem James is addressing is not the world, but rather the worldliness that we have living in us and the deception we have thinking we don’t have any in us..
We keep pointing to problems in the world, and God is wanting to know how we are changing our parenting today to help our kids grow in love with Jesus.
Don’t worry about attack on the definition of marriage in our world, how have you cultivated a marriage that the world is jealous to have?
If you want the world change, limit the worldliness that influences your heart.
If you want the world to change, be slow to speak.
if you want the world to change, look in in the mirror and start obeying God’s word in your home, words, money, sexuality, forgiveness, worship, priorities, politics, power dynamics, in every area of your life.
#BEABOUTIT
don’t just hear about it, be about it.
don’t just talk about it, be about it.

PRACTICING THE WAY
As disciples of Jesus, we know our allegiance to Him as King is expressed in our daily practice. We are not pursuing perfection but want to practice our faith each day. These practices will point you toward spiritual formation as an apprentice (disciple) to Jesus.
(1) Start the Bible Recap reading plan.
(2) Recite this prayer/liturgy daily: “Our Father who is in heaven, Holy is Your name. May Your Kingdom come. May Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
(3) Talk it Over (with friends, a spouse, or your Group)
The message was about allowing God’s word to impact our lifestyle. What is one idea from Sunday’s message that impacted you?
Read James 1:19-27. What does this passage teach about God?
What is one input you need eliminate from you life?
Read Matthew 7:21-27. What do you notice about obeying God’s word?
Read Deuteronomy 6. What are these verses communicating to us?
Close in prayer, reciting the Lord’s Prayer (see above) aloud as a group.
