Key Words: Fellowship, Light, Know, and Love
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Light
The phrase "God is light" does not constitute the being of God. It must be understood in the same sense that we understand God is love, God is good, God is a Spirit, God is a consuming fire, and other statements about Him.
In the same sense we understand that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, or the door (Jn. 10:9; 14:6). These expressions don't do away with the reality and personality of God and Christ. See note, Jn. 4:24
Job 32:8 (NKJV)
But there is a spirit in man,
And the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.
Psalm 27:1 (NKJV)
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 36:9 (NKJV)
For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light.
Psalm 43:3 (NKJV)
Oh, send out Your light and Your truth!
Let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your holy hill
And to Your tabernacle.
Psalm 104:2 (NKJV)
Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment,
Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.
[fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ]
Four persons with whom to have fellowship:
God the Father (Isa. 57:15; Jn. 14:23; 17:21-23 1Cor. 6:13; 1Jn. 1:3-7)
God the Son (Mt. 18:20; Jn. 14:23; 15:1-8 1Cor. 1:9; 10:16; 1Jn. 1:3-7)
God the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:9; 1Cor. 3:16; 2Cor. 13:14; Php. 2:1)
The Christian (Acts 1:14; 2:1,42-47 Eph. 5:19; Php. 2:1-2 1Jn. 1:3-7)
Joy
Isaiah 55:12 (NKJV)
“For you shall go out with joy,
And be led out with peace;
The mountains and the hills
Shall break forth into singing before you,
And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Jeremiah 15:16 (NKJV)
Your words were found, and I ate them,
And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart;
For I am called by Your name,
O Lord God of hosts.
whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,
[joy may be full]
This expression is used four times by John (Jn. 15:11; 16:24; 1Jn. 1:4; 2Jn. 1:12)
Five conditions of fellowship:
Walk in the light of Scriptures as it is received
Be truthful in confessing we are sinners (Rom. 3:23)
Repent of sins
Make peace with God (Lk. 13:1-5)
Be truthful about actual transgressions against God
[fellowship] Greek: koinonia (G2842), used here in 1Jn. 1:3,6,7. See note, 2Cor. 13:14
