The Unfaithful Nation: Exile and Destruction (Lesson 32 and 33) 11/12/24
Introduction:
* Israel as a nation experienced an era of unity under the leadership of Saul, David, and Solomon. May not have been perfect but they were a united people.
* By the year 931 the united Kingdom was divided
* Ten tribes to the North under Jeroboam (son of Nebat)- this was what was known at Israel
* Two tribes in South under Rehoboam (son of Solomon) - This is what was known as Judah
Aim:
* To see the fulfillment of Moses’ prophesy in Deut28-30, about unfaithfulness and idolatry.
* To follow the remaining history of Israel as a nation to its end: Apostasy and destruction to due unfaithfulness and idolatry.
Outline:
* Division of the united kingdom (mark and read 2Kngs11-12)
* The northern kingdom- Jeroboam is king
* The southern kingdom - Rehoboam is king
* The “covenant people/Israel” are, as are all other nations, righteously judged. National division, political corruption, and religious apostasy always lead to ruin; no one, no nation is exempt or excluded (c.f. Pro14:34)
* You can read in the scripture in both the major and the minor prophets the work of God to warn the people to repent and return.
* Then came the deportation of the Northern Kingdom by Assyria (722 B.C.)
* The sin, the idolatry of Jeroboam (making the two calves) cause all Israel to sin (1Kngs12:25-33)
* This is the start of national destruction due to the disobedience (again read Deu28-30)
* God is faithful, God keeps His word by scattering, this starts in the Israel by the captivity in Assyria.
* Take the time to read about the seige of the capital, Samaria and the carrying off the people into captivity (2Kgs17:1-6, 18)
For the Northern tribes the covenant of cursing b reality (See Deut28:15, 63-64)
* There were none left except Judah according to (2Kgs17:18)
* Then there was the deportation of the Judah (Southern kingdom) into Babylonian captivity between (605-586 B.C.)
* Judah had continued to be faithful after the fall of Northern Kingdom due to their good king and great prophet (again see 2Kgs18-20)
* The king being: Hezekiah
* The prophet being: Isaiah
* It did not last for Hezekiah son, Manasseh led Judah astray into idol worship for fifty years (2Kgs21:1-18)
* He tried to correct this problem before the end of his life (2Chro33:10-20)
* But it was too little too late. The people of Judah were idolatrous in their hearts. So you see political, moral and religious corruption had begun its cancerous work. Doom was evident and imminent.
* The fall of Judah. Came in the time of the rise of the Babylonian empire that overthrew the Assyrians in (612 B.C.) The deportation happen in three waves
* 606 B.C. (2Kgs24:1-7) where Jehoiakim, the royals , and the best of the best like Daniel are taken (see Dan1:1f)
* 597 B.C. (2Kgs24:8-20) where Jehoiachin (aka Jeconiah, Coniah) and the queen mother are taken into captivity; along with the craftsmen, nobles and soldiers (about 10,000 in number); As well as Ezekiel was deported (Eze1:1-3)
* 586 B.C. The third deportation (2Kgs25:1-12; 2Chro36:17-21) The walls broken down, the city sacked, burned and destroyed. Zedekiah (aka: Mattaniah) the puppet king was blinded, chained and deported (2Kgs24:17)
Conclusion:
* The curse and ultimate doom has come upon “all” Israel (review Deut30)
* Jehovah has departed - The nation is dead!
* Although the nation is dead, God’s promise is not.
* The seed-line is preserved
* A remnant will return to the land after seventy years in exile.
The Preservation and restoration of the remnant (Lesson 33)
Introduction:
* Both Moses (Deut30:1-20)and Joshua (Jos24:14-24) had warned the people that captivity, removal from the land, would happen as a result of apostasy.
* The Prophets also warned of the impending doom, and national catastrophe, and what do you know? It all came to pass.
Aim:
* To realize the return of a remnant that is fulfilled prophesy.
* To summarize the Nation-land aspect of God’s promise to Abraham and his seed.
Outline:
* The Babylonian rule was made known it was going to be for seventy years (Jer25:8-12)
* The prophesy of the return of the remnant was made know too for after seventy years (Dan9:1-2)
* In Jeremiah the great prophet Jehovah makes the following predictions
* I will visit you
* I will perform my good word toward you in causing you to return to this place (Jerusalem)
* I will be found of you
* I will turn again your captivity
* I will gather you from all the places I have driven you.
* I will bring you again unto the place where I caused you to be carried away from.
* Please review/read Deut30:3-4 w/Jer29:14)
* Jehovah promised a return from exile
* It would only be a remnant
* It would happen after 70 years
* The return would take place under His servant Cyrus (the Cyrus decree 536 B.C.).
* All of God’s promises regarding the Nation-land promise have taken place. Both possessing, being deported, and the return of the remnant.
* Prophesy Fulfilled: A remnant returned.
* Please read Ezra’s record (Ezr9:13-15)
* First group 536 B.C. (Ezr1:1-3, 11)
* Second group 458 B.C. (Ezr7:1-9)
* Nehemiah’s record (Ne1:3, 8:10)
* Haggai’s record (Hag1:2-3, 12-14)
Note: For quiz be prepared to point to scriptures for answers to questions, so be sure to read them
Conclusion:
* God’s promise to Abraham concerning the Nation-Land has been fulfilled; Scripture clearly tells us (Jos21:43-45)
* The prophesy of a remnant return after the apostasy and exile has also taken place (Deut30:3-4)
* God has nothing more of a carnal nature for a Jew. For redemption from sin is found in Christ and Christ alone. The promised spiritual seed and the spiritual blessings are found in Him.
