John 1:35-51 (And invitation to come and see!)
Recap from Last week John the Baptist, witnessed that Jesus is the Son of God after seeing the Holy Spirt rest on him, as God who send John to be the forerunner for Jesus, and make people prepared for Jesus. John and John wittiness about Jesus that he is Christ, God, came in flesh, the promised one the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.
In the text today people will start following Jesus, like start walking after him. Let’s read.
The next day, is used again here, as John again said, Behold the Lamb of God, - two of John’s disciples followed Jesus because they heard what John said about Jesus.
Jesus turns around and ask what are you seeking? They don’t say we are seeking you, want to follow you, because of what John said you are the lamb og God, it seems like a bit strange to me,
They do respond Rabbi (master teacher – Jesus could reject them, but he did not), where are you staying, (Why?) Jesus then invites them “come and you will see”. They do and stay with him about 16.
Verse 40 Names one of the people that followed Jesus, it is Andrew, Simons Peter’s brother. (We don’t know and the bible does not tell us who the other one is, and that is okay, the bible dose not tell us all the things we what to know but what we do need to know, we don’t need to use much to speculate, we can say it is not revealed – some and church father say church tradition say it might be the John the writer, -it is also possible that John does not identify the 2 disciple so that the reader needs to make up his mind if that was me what would I do, what does it mean to follow Jesus as Christ? Only in heaven will we know).
Andrew gets his brother Simon, and say:
We have found the Messiah, (John helps the reader with langue) - in the Greek the Christ. The anointed one, the savior, most likely expected to rule as king and throw out the Romans. And brings him to Jesus, Jesus takes a look at Peter and said, you should be called rock. – Well, he said who his father was his flesh descent, but Jesus is calling him too more. (Peter is the Greek for Cephas Aimeich)
For the 3 time the next day – Jesus goes to Galilee, where Jesus found Philip (that means he is looking for him), and said Follow me. A clear call to come and follow Jesus. Philip was form Bethsaida were Andrew and Peter also was from. (Jesus finds us…).
Philip like Andrew goes and finds his friend Nathaneal (Bartholomew) say we found the one Moses wrote about the prophets – and give his identity Jesus of Nazarat, the son of Joseph. (But the Christ can have no earthly descend? And geography he should be from Betlehem). And Nathaneal state what could be the sentiment of the time (some said riverialt between towns), can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip does not start a discussion; but say come and see… And that meeting with Jesus will change Natnael totally.
Peter did not question Jesus about him knowing who he was, but Nataniel will, as Jesus said look an Israelite, honest an upright, not full of deceit and falseness. Nataniel ask How you know me? – Jesus gives a stirring answer before Philip called you, I saw you, under the fig tree… (Questions from Church kids is does Jesus know the future, here he does, and he can see in side Nataniel Jesus could see Him before his friend even had called him).
In a big turn of events Nataniel say that Jesus is master, teacher, Son of God the King of Israel. (Because Jesus shows Nataniel that he knew him, Jesus told him who he was). Jesus is not so impressed and ask the question did you believe because I said I saw you under the fig tree? Oh, you have not seen anything yet. You are going to see much greater things. (Jesus will show who he is and it is more than Nathalie thinks).
Verse 51. Jesus say amen amen,: you will se heaven open and the angles of God ascending and descending on the son of Man. (I am the I am and I make a way from Heaven to Earth, and you will see me do this, bring Gods kingdom to heaven as I minister healing, food, teaching to people and let people know who God is). Boom an intitation to keep reading and to start asking who is this Jesus?
Now we head form 3 more people who they say Jesus is, Andrew, Philip, Nathanel and Jesus interaction with Peter,
The Lamb of God
Rabbi, Messiah/Christ, Son of God, the King of Israel. No only that but how changed the disciples are after meting with Jesus.
The Gospel of John is showing us who Jesus is, how will we respond? How will you respond?
What did the disciples do? They pout their faith and hope in Jesus, and followed him, they believed, what John said, they even experienced it, as Jesus told them who they were. Peter and Nataniel.
What do we do as we find Jesus? Andrew as one wrote, is always brining people to Jesus, he does not do sermons, but brings people to Jesus. He lives out what he believes about Jesus, He starts with his brother. (Wow what about me/you when we meet Jesus? What do we do?)
Jesus asked what are you seeking?
And responds come and see? What are we seeking and will we come and see?
John the writer is letting us know who Jesus, and how others find out also.
The reader might ask well how will Jesus explain and show who he is? And that is what John will write about in the rest of the book.
