INTRODUCTION
Chapter 20 is the start of a new age
The church age is gone
Sin is gone
Evil is gone
deception is gone
And Jesus is here
And the first thing we see on the other side of the church age is a thousand year reign of Christ
Please share your Opinions or what you have been taught about the millennium reign?
Different views of the Millennial Period
premillennialism: Christ will return to earth, destroy the forces of evil, and reign here for 1,000 years. This period will end with the release of Satan, a final defeat of Satan, followed by the Great White Throne Judgement, and the future age
Amillennialism (no millennium): there will be no literal earthly reign of Christ following the second coming. This 1,000 year reign is symbolic of His reign on earth now. The events in Rev 20:1-6 are symbolic of the church age.
Postmillennialism: Occurs towards the end of the church age. This belief adheres that the gospel will eventually win the world and we will enter into a time of great peace
The Binding of Satan
The Binding of Satan
Revelation 20:1–3 “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.”
The angel “holding the key to the abyss”
The word abyss means “underworld”
The abyss here refer to hell which also serves as a prison for demonic spirits
2 Peter 2:4 “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;”
We saw earlier in Revelation 9:1-2 the angel with the key that released the demons upon the earth
And he laid hold of the dragon and bound him for 1,000 years.
Now we saw the defeat of the Antichrist and the false prophet in Rev 19:20-21
But here we have the dragon who is finally punished and imprisoned for 1,000 years
(v 3) “and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer”
I want to make some application from this verse because it gives us some insight on Satan’s strategies
Satan’s power is incomparable here to God’s power
God can simply order an angel to capture Satan instantly and imprison him or destroy him
But his chief weapon is deception
Part of the A-millennial/premillennial debate is that Satan is “bound” here for 1,000 years
A-millennials believe that the church age is the millennial kingdom when Christ reigns (after the resurrection) and Satan is bound (restricted).
But this verse says that Satan is bound so that he no longer deceives the nations
QUESTION: Do you think Satan deceives the nations (or people) today? How?
Convinces people that there will be more satisfaction and fulfilment in disobedience than obedience
Ephesians 2:2 “in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.”
Convinces people that God is not good and does not have good in mind for those who follow Him
2 Corinthians 4:4 “in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
It seems clear that when this 1,000 year period happens, Satan’s work of deception will cease
1,000 year reign of the saints
1,000 year reign of the saints
Revelation 20:4–6 “Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.”
The first resurrection
(v 4) “and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years”
Who are these who come to live during this time?
I think the key is in verse 5: This is the first resurrection
This is the raising of all believers.
Martyrs
Those who refused the mark of the beast
Those who died in Christ
(v 6) “Blessed and holy is the one who has part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power”
The second death is referring to the spiritual death when all those outside of Christ will be thrown in to the lake of fire
So we have a resurrection of all believers of all times are raised and begin to reign with Jesus.
(v 4) “says that judgement was given to them”
1 Corinthians 6:2 “Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent to constitute the smallest law courts?”
A literal resurrection
1 Corinthians 15:40–44 “There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.”
1 Corinthians 15:50–52 “Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.”
What will we be doing during the millennial period?
The OT prophets provide some glimpses though this is debated as to what thyeb are referring to
Isaiah 11:6–9 “And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox. The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea.”
Isaiah 65:20–25 ““No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, Or an old man who does not live out his days; For the youth will die at the age of one hundred And the one who does not reach the age of one hundred Will be thought accursed. “They will build houses and inhabit them; They will also plant vineyards and eat their fruit. “They will not build and another inhabit, They will not plant and another eat; For as the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, And My chosen ones will wear out the work of their hands. “They will not labor in vain, Or bear children for calamity; For they are the offspring of those blessed by the Lord, And their descendants with them. “It will also come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear. “The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain,” says the Lord.”
“Priests of God”
Priests had many functions but one of them is that he had access to the holy place in the temple
That seems to be the idea here: constant fellowship with Jesus Christ
“will reign with Him for 1,000 years”
This is the idea of ruling the earth
In other words, wickedness and sinful people will no longer reign, but God’s people in righteousness will reign
It seems from verse 8 that there will be nations upon the earth at this time
Release of Satan and the battle of Mog and Magog
Release of Satan and the battle of Mog and Magog
The final doom of Satan
He demonstrates his unrelenting character by continuing what he began
He once again deceives the nations
Who is Gog and Magog?
I really do not know
They are mentioned in Genesis 10:2 “The sons of Japheth were Gomer and Magog and Madai and Javan and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras.”
And also in 1 Chronicles 1:5 “The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras.”
What we do know if they will align with Satan and come against the people of God once again
God will destroy them and sentence Satan to the eternal fire forever
Where they will be tormented day and night forever and ever
