James 3:13–18 NKJV
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
Wise and Understanding
In the early 20th century, Albert Einstein, despite his genius, famously remarked that wisdom is not simply knowledge. He equated wisdom with the pursuit of knowledge paired with humility and ethical understanding. Just as Einstein sought to understand the universe with awe and reverence, we too must approach God with humility in our quest for wisdom, entrusting our inquiries to Him who knows all things.
Wise comes from the word (sophos) and is described as someone who possesses moral insight and skill in deciding practical issues of conduct.
Understanding comes from the word (epistemon) which implies someone who is an expert and able to apply that knowledge to practical situations.
Wisdom denotes moral quality and understanding denotes intellectual.
In late August of 2023 a young boy nocked on the door of his neighbors house looking for food and water. It would later be discovered that he was the child of a social media influencer who made her fame giving parental advice. When he was discovered he still had duct tape on his ankles, open wounds, and rope burns where he had been tied up. His mother (Ruby Franke) had become famous and garnered thousands of followers through her “expertise” in parenting. Yet, she pled guilty to four counts of child abuse and endangerment. She said she was confused and thought dark was light and right was wrong.
Knowledge and wisdom is not the same thing. Some people have knowledge but lack the ability to apply that knowledge.
