The Argument: God is Able to Save Because of Who He is and for What He Does and Has Done.
I. God keeps His Word Through It All. (v. 1-5)
I. God keeps His Word Through It All. (v. 1-5)
1. God’s Word is unwavering and steadfast to accomplish all He purposed from before the foundation of the Universe.
17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
2. “That Day” is the eschatological future for Israel when God will set her once more upon her own land under a perfect King. On that day Israel and Judah will shake the nations and all the peoples of the world.
28 “Yahweh will strike you with madness and with blindness and with bewilderment of heart;
3. Those who have “eyes to see” will behold that it is far better to follow God than it is to oppose Him or stand against His people and His work.
5 God is in the midst of her, she will not be shaken; God will help her when morning dawns.
II. God transforms Chaos to Order; Suffering to Exuberant Joy. (v. 6-9)
II. God transforms Chaos to Order; Suffering to Exuberant Joy. (v. 6-9)
1. From Judah will come the great judgement for the peoples of the world, while those who dwell in Jerusalem will find themselves in true peace.
18 “Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau will be as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau,” For Yahweh has spoken.
19 Then those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, And those of the Shephelah, the Philistine plain; And they will possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, And Benjamin will possess Gilead.
2. The tribe of Judah will be lifted high among the people of Israel as the King of David’s lineage arises to fulfill all righteousness.
7 And the women sang as they were merry and said, “Saul has struck his thousands, And David his ten thousands.”
3. God will make even the feeble strong, as they follow after God’s own heart. Because of God’s faithfulness, and His love for His Children, all who oppose Him, His King, and their work will perish.
17 But he who boasts is to boast in the Lord.
III. The Works of God Depict His Deliverance for His Children. (v. 10-14)
III. The Works of God Depict His Deliverance for His Children. (v. 10-14)
1. It is God’s Grace that gives us the Pierced One. The Father was pleased to receive the Son’s offer to die as a righteous man in place of the sinners, so to open the way to eternal life.
15 Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high, And the wilderness becomes a fruitful orchard, And the fruitful orchard is counted as a forest.
3 ‘For I will pour out water on the thirsty ground And streams on the dry land; I will pour out My Spirit on your seed And My blessing on your offspring;
2. The lamenting will be as for King Josiah, whose reign was a reformation of the people to abandon idols to return to YHWH Himself. His death is an unimaginable loss for the people of Judah, as recorded in 2 Chronicles 35:22-25.
22 However, Josiah would not turn away from him, but disguised himself in order to make war with him; nor did he listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, but came to make war on the plain of Megiddo.
23 Then the archers shot King Josiah, and the king said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am badly wounded.”
24 So his servants took him out of the chariot and drove him in the second chariot which he had, and brought him to Jerusalem where he died, and he was buried in the tombs of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
25 Then Jeremiah chanted a lament for Josiah. And all the male and female singers speak about Josiah in their lamentations to this day. And they made them a statute in Israel; behold, they are also written in the lamentations.
3. Beholding the Pierced One will leave the inhabitants of the city of peace under a deep brokenhearted state for the sins of the Priests, the Scribes, and the Rulers of the people.
1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?
2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should desire Him.
3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our peace fell upon Him, And by His wounds we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But Yahweh has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living, That for the transgression of my people, striking was due to Him?
9 So His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
God is able to Save Because of Who He is and for what He does and Has done.
IV. How do We Live Under the Power of The Pierced One?
IV. How do We Live Under the Power of The Pierced One?
1973A bleeding Savior makes men’s hearts bleed. When he is pierced, they also are pierced. Of one thing I am sure, that nothing ever pierced my heart like the discovery of God’s boundless love in giving his beloved Son to die for me.—54.260
Charles Spurgeon
We carry our cross daily—We commit ourselves daily to pray, to study His Word, and to serve one another under His Grace, Mercy, and Authority.
We see others as more honorable than ourselves—Our service, ministry, work, and being is guided by the loe that led Jesus to the cross, the tomb, and the resurrection.
We make the main thing, the main thing—Jesus Christ,Him Crucified, Resurrected, and Ascended is the message of His Disciples.
