Outline:
Clarifying Questions: “Who Has Bewitched You?” (vs. 1-6)
Statement of Fact: “Those of Faith” (vs. 7-9))
Summary of the Chapter: Faith in Christ makes us God’s Family
Memory verse of the Chapter: Galatians 3:11 “Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.””
Illustration: When was the last time you got the “stink eye?” (Last year, coach Reid (Kansas city chiefs) gave travis kelce the stink eye in the playoffs, Miracle on 34th street, “May I remind you, you are under oath” even though her husband was giving her the look. Who gave the “look” your mom or dad?

Clarifying Questions: “Who Has Bewitched You?” (vs. 1-6)
Foolishness (v. 1)
Oh foolish Galatians! “ano-eh-toi” mindless- “not marked by the use of reason”. It is an adjective, meaning, it is describing someone’s actions not as a noun- “You are acting foolish, what you are doing is mindless”. Not, “You are an idiot”. He is addressing the people of Galatia, not just Peter.
Titus 3:3 “For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.”
Is “foolishness” the same as stupidity? Look at Proverbs! 2 paths, “Wisdom” and “Foolishness”.
Who has bewitched you? “ebaskanen” 1x (2 in the septuagint Deut 28:54), aor, act, ind, 3rd, sg, “to give the evil eye- to look at someone with a covetous or envious heart, throught of as casting a magical spell that wreaks various degrees of harm on its object”
It was before your eyes
that Jesus Christ was publicly (clearly, vividly) portrayed as crucified- it has only been around 15-20 years since the death of Jesus that Paul is writing this.
Publically portrayed: “proegraph-e”- aor, pass, ind, 3rd, sg to be posted, write beforehand- to be or become affixed in a public place or for public notice
Crucified:“estaurwmenos”- perf, pass, part, nom, mas, sg to be crucified
There is a play on words going on here, “who has given you the evil eye that has made you change your mind on what your eyes have seen”
5 questions (vs. 2-6)
Let me ask you (pl, not just talking to Peter) only this:
Did you (pl) receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Shared experience- Main question!
Are you (pl) so foolish?- same word as before, adjective, are you presently being foolish? Check your heart!!
Having begun by the Spirit, are you (pl) now being perfected by the flesh?
Having Begun-“enarxamenoi” aor, mid, part, nom, mas, pl to begin- to take the first tep or steps in carrying out an action
by the Spirit
Being perfected- “epiteleisthe” pres, mid/pass, ind, 2nd pl to be perfected, complete, accomplished
the flesh
“Chirstians think that we are saved by the gospel, but then we grow by appling biblical principles to every area of life. But we are not just saved by the gospel, we grow by applying the gospel to every area of life” (Dick Kaufmann, Galatians for You 68).
Did you suffer so many things in vain- if indeed it was in vain?
Acts 14:21–22 “When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”
Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith- just as Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness?
Supplies the spirit- “epixor-eh-gwn” (5x) pres, act, part, nom, masc, sg provide, give, furnish
works miracles- “energwn” pres, act, part, nom, masc, sg work, be at work, to carry out or perform an action or course of action
Acts 14:3 “So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.”
Acts 14:8–11 “Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was crippled from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well, said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he sprang up and began walking. And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!””
By works of the law OR
Hearing with faith- Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Abraham did not have the Law!! Gen 12 and 15 come before Ex 20.
Application/Implications:
Renew the Mind (the Scriptures):
What caught your attention in this section?
Which verses or words would you like to study a little more this week?
Engage the Heart (humility vs. pride):
Is it possible to be a “foolish believer”? Yes! How do I know if I am a fool or just foolish?
Bewitched: who or what has the most influence over your decision making? Who is the person that can reduce you to nothing by just a look of disappointment or disapproval?
In what ways am I tempted to believe the gospel is only for the moment of salvation and the destination of heaven and not the journey of life? You would probably never say that, but how do you live that?
How do you believe God works? Do you believe that He gives you everything you need and then sends you off to figure it out yourself? Do you believe that he works only when we are living according to biblical principles, self-control, and discipline? Do you think He is waiting to get involved until you get your act together and start living like a Christian or do you think He is the reason you would ever act like a christian in the first place? where is the line between waiting for God to change your heart and making steps to change your behaviour?
Enlist the Body (faith steps):
Ask a trusted friend this week, are there areas in my life that you think I am being foolish by moving away from what the Bible says about the gospel?
Transitional phrase: Paul challenges the Galatians, who has changed the way you look at the gospel? Now he is going to bring the testimony of Abraham.
Statement of Fact: “Those of Faith” (vs. 7-9)
Statement of Fact: “Those of Faith” (vs. 7-9)
Clarifying the facts (vs. 7-8)
Know then- I want you to presently know, here are the facts!
that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham- and this is not just based off of a collective experience…
and the Scripture- the source and authority
foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith
preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham saying
“In you shall all the nations be blessed” (Gen 12:3)
The blessing of faith (v. 9)
So then- giving reason
those who are of faith
are blessed along with Abraham- it is no longer about geneology, circumcision, being clean according to the law.
the man of faith- faith in God’s provision. Salvation and sanctification have always been possible by God’s grace through faith in His provision/promise.

What statements of fact do you need to review in the Scriptures today?
Our growth group just read through Ps 119 together. If you are struggling on where to read this week in your devotions, start there and see all the blessings found within the Word of God.
So, what do I do when it seems that “that person” who has a lot of influence in my life is giving me the “look” about something that is different than what I see in the Scriptures?
That is hard!
Look at the source of God’s Word
Ask God to give you the strength to follow by faith what He says
If you are someone that is heavily opinionated can I just caution you, you have a lot of influence on those around you. Are your looks and arguments pointing people to the gospel and their need for Jesus or towards agreeing with you
