Many Into One
Many Into One
16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
To eat the bread and to drink the cup is to enjoy fellowship with Christ and to experience the benefits of His death.
The central claim in verse 17 is that we who are many are one body, and the basis for this claim is our joint participation in the Lord’s Supper.
So here, Paul roots the church’s unity in its celebration of the Lord’s Supper. There is one body because there is one bread.
The reference to one bread is Paul’s way of referencing the church’s corporate, all-together celebration of the Lord’s Supper because we share in fellowship with Christ together.
So when those of us who are in Christ, partake in the Lord’s Supper, we renew our commitment to Christ and to each other.
This two-fold commitment: our commitment to Christ and to one another is much of what makes us a church.
Quoting an author who answers the question, what does it take to make a church? He says, Gospel preaching that creates gospel people who participate in gospel ordinances.
As We Wait For the Lord
As We Wait For the Lord
So as we anticipate the Lord’s return, and contend with the burdens and corruption of this word as we wait, we proclaim our hope together today. That Jesus Christ, who has paid the price of our sin and conquered it through His resurrection.
We proclaim our hope today not only to express that we have been granted salvation from our sin and the impending destruction of the world as individuals, but we proclaim this to one another. If we are in Christ, we are one in Christ. We wait and endure together.
This is our hope. To repeat the words of Jesus:
33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
So if the Lord Jesus Christ is your hope and salvation, you are invited to partake with the rest of the body of Christ today.
We want to recognize the seriousness of our sin for which Jesus paid the price by taking a moment to seek the Lord now. Perhaps confessing sin and asking His forgiveness.
Pray to pronounce pardon
Explain Process
Give elements to elders
Invite people to come forward
Put plates back on table
Serve elders
Ask if anyone needs to be served
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Ask elder to bless bread
As Jesus Himself made clear, the bread represents His body which was broken for us. Take now and eat.
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Ask elder to bless the cup
Jesus explained that the cup is the New Covenant in His blood. Let us drink it remembrance of Him.
Know brother, know without a doubt sister, Jesus paid the price in full, and on this basis we are members of the New Covenant community. Praise the Lord.
We will sing a hymn together, but before we do, it is our custom on this particular Sunday of the month to take an offering for our benevolence fund that will go towards the immediate physical that exist among us, so that offering will be taken as we sing together.
