When the eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus—the name given by the angel before he was conceived.

INTRO—

(One of) The hardest part of Christmas for me…
[Hint from last week]
Returning to ‘regularly scheduled programming’
[[Luke 2.21-39]]

Mary & Joseph Present Jesus @ Temple [Luke 2.21-24]

NECESSARY ROUTINE [2.21-22]
[[There just are some things that do not (can’t; won’t) wait. We must…]]
8 days — Circumcision & naming the child
Same as JtB & all Jewish male children
40 days — purification of mom according to the Law (‘their’ = Mary & Joseph?; …& Jesus?)
Same for all Jewish women
TWO TURTLE-DOVES [2.24]
[[“…on the second day of Christmas…”]]
Pair (ζεῦγος)… two (δύο)
The offering of a poor couple/family as per the Law [NOTE-NOTE: Still no Wise Men at this point]
**NOTICE: much of the Vintage Christmas takes place amid the ‘day-to-day’ life of these people!
So, for us—we should look to see God at work in the every-day…and every day…of our lives.

Simeon’s Blessing [Luke 2.25-35]

GUIDED ENCOUNTER [2.27-28]
A Holy Spirit promise kept (2.26; 2.27 - “…by [means of] the Spirit, he entered the temple. When the parents brought…”)
A promise to a ‘righteous and devout…the Holy Spirit was on him’ man [ = priest?; faithful Jew? …at the very least]
How many previous days had he shown up, hoping to see the Messiah? [How old was he at this point?]
AWAITING CONSOLATION [2.25, 30-32]
‘Awaiting’ — “looking forward to” (2.25); to pre-admit into and thus expect [anticipate]
‘Israel’s consolation’ — comfort; come alongside ( = comforter)
Isaiah 40:1 ““Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God.”
The consolation comes from…
Salvation of God (2.30)
For everyone (2.31-32; light to Gentiles…glory to Israel)
**NOTICE: Patient resilience has great reward. We will see what God has promised!

Anna’s Prophecy [Luke 2.36-39]

WELL-ALONG WITNESS [2.36-37]
Her age — At least 84, possibly 104+!!!
Her station — Prophetess; exemplary life = serving constantly (consistently) especially fasting & prayers […did she live at the temple?? ‘day & night’]
AWAITING REDEMPTION [2.38]
Another who ‘awaits;’ looks forward to; pre-admits & expects; hopeful anticipation!
There seems to have been, at least, a group of people like these two! [Might’ve been right there at that moment…we don’t know]
‘Redemption of Jerusalem’ [set free; liberate; deliver]
…thus, redemption—consolation—SALVATION!
**NOTICE: We are never not useful. God calls us to life-long faithfulness.

CONCL—

The route home was not immediate…nor was it terribly direct.
