Notes:

Gabriel was sent by God on TWO VERY different missions:
Last week
This week
I can imagein Gabriel wondering at first, “Nazareth… Hmm… Where is that? Is that in Israel?”
Reason why Matthew, Mark, and Luke qualifies where Nazareth was? “In Galilea”
John 1:46: Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
No one knows where it, and the ones that do don’t have very good things to say about it…
Gabriel’s 2 missions are filled with dichotomies, differences, and tension.
Explore the first
Explore the Conversation between Mary and Gabriel
See that throughout the tension, Luke’s shares a story about discipleship.
- Regardless
From Priesthood to Kingship
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.
It’s in the dichotomies that we find values of the Kingdom
1. From Religious Portal to Random Rural
Intimate scene in the Temple
Temple to Nazareth (Religious Center to Ethnic Fringes)
Center of attention moves to the fringes.
Reason why Matthew, Mark, and Luke qualify where Nazareth was? “In Galilea”
John 1:46: Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
2. Urban, Ordained, Married, Respected, Elderly Man to Rural, Socially Insignificant, Unmarried, Young Woman
3. Chosen by Lot versus Chosen by God
God worked through secondary causes to send Gabriel to the alter of incense.
Gabriel sends a message directly to Mary about her chosenness:
v. 28: “Geetings, O Favored One.”
v. 30: “May, you have found favor with God.”
Describing the King
30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Remarkable amount of information about this Jesus
Two More Dychotomies
v. 34: “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
v. 35-38: “And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.”
1. From Reaction to Reflection
The Encounter
“Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”
“You who are highly favored.”
Not
Greatly troubled
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”
“Don’t be frightful because you are favored.”
Points to her humility.
That’s not me!
“You’ve got the wrong address.”
Discernment:
Tried to Discern what kind of greeting this was:
Why was she so shocked by the greeting?
2. Questioning Credentials versus Clarifying the Process
Zecheriah: Doubt verses
Priest should know, a hillbilly Mary, not so much.
Mary: Future Tense: “How will this happen since I am not knowing a man?”
Humanly obstacles.
Not a question of doubt.
Freedom in our prayer life.
Daring Discipleship
Following this King
Discipleship=Understand what it means to follow this type of King
From Fixing Shame to Producing Shame
What is she willing to say yes to here?
Challenging statement: What are you willing to give up to obey God’s Word
Adultery=Capital Punishment
Mary
Veneration? Or Humiliation
Catholic Catechism: ““Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things”.
