Introduction

Do you find yourself in situations that overwhelm you. You do not know what to do and feel helpless to even take the next step. In our Series on the Names of the Christ Child we look at the name, The Mighty God. We have a God who is mighty in our behalf.
In our world today there are those that will discount the claim that Jesus ever claimed to be God. They simply want to ascribe to him the title of a good teacher or miracle worker. But Jesus is so much more than a teacher. He is God in the flesh. Jesus made clear to the Samaritan woman that he was the Messiah. Thomas worshipped the resurrected Jesus as his Lord and God. The wisemen worshipped Christ as God. Isaiah 9:6 Declares that the Son born unto us is the MIGHTY GOD. It is a claim of deity and power.
D. The Christ child, Jesus Christ is the Mighty God.
P. We ought to worship the Christ child as the Mighty God.

1. The Mighty God reveals himself as the God man. Isaiah 9:6

For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given.
Explain
For unto us a child is born
How is this child to be born? There are thousands of babies born a day. What is the big deal about another birth into the world when it is such a common occurence?
This child is directed to the Jewish people.
To Abraham’s family Genesis 12:3 “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
Isaac, Jacob and his 12 sons became the recipients of the covenant God made with Abraham. Now known as present day Israel.
King David narrowed the possibilities through whom this child could be born. God made a covenant with David promising that of his descendants there would be one who would reign on his throne forever and ever.
This God man would bring about peace in the war torn region of Israel ruling upon the throne of David. This is in stark contrast to the constant anxiety and fear the Israelites were under from Syria, the Northern tribes of Israel and Assyria.
Unto us a Son is given.
This Son is different from the other thousands of sons that would be born into the world. Isaiah tells this son would be conceived by a virgin. Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.”
Look, God was taking a step towards wicked King Ahaz in his stubbornness. A finite King who was trying to manipulate his world to the greatest advantage is told that the LORD is going to give him a sign.
God was going to dwell in human flesh with man through the miracle of the virgin birth.
This Son was place in Mary’s womb by the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:34–36 “Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.”
Mary recognized that apart from a physical relationship, birth does not happen. So she asks the angel how this could be since she was betrothed to Joseph and was to be pure for Him.
Gabriel tells her the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee. The Almighty would see that God the Son was implanted as just a cell in the womb of Mary.
The Son is the Mighty God.
Omnipotent: Mark 4:35-5:43 He demonstrates his power as the Creator over all through:
Power over disasters and creation (Mk 4:35-41)
Power of demons (Mk 5:1-20)
Power over disease and sickness (Mk 5:22-34)
Power over death (Mk 5:21, 35-43)
His resurrection - (John 10:17–18)
His Power as the Son of God. (Romans 1:3)
Omnipresent: Turn with me to John 3:13 “And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.”
Jesus is on earth talking to Nicodemus. The son of man has come down.
Jesus is in heaven also at the same time. Yet the son of man is presently in heaven.
His omniscience (John 1:50; Mk 11:2-4)
Forgiving sin. (Mark 2:1–10
Mark 2:1–10 KJV 1900
And again he entered into Capernaum, after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them. And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

Didn’t Jesus never claim to be God?
His claim to a Samaritan woman. John 4:25–26 “The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.”
His claim to be I AM in the temple. John 8:58 “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”
His claim to be the Son of the blessed. Mark 14:61–62 “But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”
His claim to be the Son of man. Daniel 7:13–14 “I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.”
Isn’t there only one God?
Yes. He exists in three persons that are co-eternal, equal in power and glory.
Matthew 3:16–17 “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Why did Jesus even come?
We are born in sin, separated from God. Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me.”
So? You are condemned to die and suffer eternal condemnation in eternal torments as the consequence for your sin. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death;...” Revelation 20:14–15 “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
Without His coming we would have died in our sin. John 8:24 “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”
Without Him their is no hope of salvation. Ephesians 2:12 “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:”
With him we are saved eternally. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Ahaz didn’t trust the Mighty God and he brought great troubles in his life and his children’s lives. As a King his decisions affected the whole nation.
The Syrians plundered Ahaz’s Kingdom
The Northern tribe of Israel killed 120,000 of the Southern Kingdom of Israel’s valiant soldiers and plundered their goods.
The Assyrians would later ransack the Southern Kingdom of Judah with God preserving Jerusalem for His names sake.
Ahaz’s decisions had horrible consequences because he didn’t trust the Mighty God.
Apply
God almighty desires you to believe in His Son Jesus Christ. He revealed that He is the Savior.
Christian have you been like King Ahaz trying to control the chess game of life? Are you trying to manipulate God and others to get what you want?
Wives you ought not to manipulate your husbands.
Husbands you ought to love and cherish your wives before yourself.
Christian, Jesus is the Mighty God. Don’t use his name with disrespect. Obey what he commands. Seek to follow Him in all your ways.
What about in your plans? Is the Mighty God being allowed to dictate what He requires of you or have you shoved Him off the throne and proclaimed yourself God of your life. That is lie commonly practiced today. Man believes he is God and is accountable to nobody but himself.
My friend God Almighty graciously humbled himself to born into our world and die for you and I. How can we neglect so great salvation. How can we not offer our lives to this gracious and merciful Mighty God. Jeremiah 32:18 “Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts, is his name,”
Jesus is Mighty God now as he was then. Through your happiest and saddest day he remains the same. 1 Peter 1:8 “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:”
When your rich, or your broke He is still the Mighty God. Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

2. The Mighty God will Rule over all. Isaiah 9:6-7a

And the government shall be upon his shoulder…of the increase of his government there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom.
Explain
The government upon his shoulder pictures the possession of authority. As this was a common depiction of authority in ANE culture.
Of the increase of his government there shall be no end.
He is limitless in power.
The Lord himself is the one who holds the universe together by the word of His power. Hebrews 1:3 “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
He holds our universe together and in his mighty power is concerned about the hear count on our head. Great is our God and of great power!
He will rule over all nations.
Psalm 2 Reminds all those who oppose Him to submit or be dashed in pieces. Serve Him in fear and rejoice with trembling. Lest you think that the Mighty God is just a terror to all, you are mistaken. For the end, describes the happiness of those who trust this Mighty Son of God.
Psalm 100:1 “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.” Foresees the Millennial Reign of Christ when he will rule the world.
While at Christmas we do not see the earthly rule of Jesus, we will one day.
Revelation 19:4 “And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.”
Revelation 21:3 “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.”
Upon the throne of His Father David.
Luke 1:30–33 “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
A fulfillment of God’s Covenant with David in 2 Samuel 7.
Jesus, King David’s Son, is David’s Lord. This is an evidence of the Divinity of Christ. Mark 12:35–37 “And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.”
While Ahaz ruled on the throne of David, He did so wickedly. He sought the help of foreign kings instead of seeking God. But this King is God.

I do what I want and seemed to get away with it. Mat 24:12
Why is their suffering in our world? If God was all powerful wouldn’t he eradicate suffering?
Sin
Suffering is a calling of the Christian. 1 Peter 1:21

People get away with lying: 26 FBI agents were infiltrating and encouraging the Jan 6th debacle.
COVID19 alot of stuff was proclaimed as Gospel truth without evidence, now the facts are coming out and it isn’t pretty.
The rule of God will one day right all wrongs. John 5:22 “For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:”
Apply
We know God will rule the world. In His longsuffering waiting for sinners to repent he withholds his just wrath upon sin. Revelation reveals that his wrath will be outpoured on the world in the seven year tribulation.
While I many times wish I could make others believe God will rule and have them trust Jesus as their Savior, I cannot. However, I can encourage them and let God guide and direct in all areas of my life. For remember this Mighty God is also a wonderful counselor.
What does the Mighty God’s rule look like in your life.
Proverbs 3:6 “In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.” God what is your will for me? How will this glorify you?
Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” When you get up when you go to bed and through out the day SEEK GOD. Let him be known in all you do.
Colossians 3:23 “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”

3. The Mighty God will Recompense Justly. Isaiah 9:7b

…to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justices from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. Isaiah 9:7
Jeremiah 32:18 “Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts, is his name,”
Explain
Order it
The word is commonly rendered establish and make firm.
Jesus Christ is going to order David’s Kingdom.
Establish it: support, strengthen and comfort.
When President Trump takes office Lord-willing January 20th, there is going to be a lot of changes that are going to be made. The priorities of his government is going to be different from the previous administration. He has largely finished picking his cabinet and they are people that will help strengthen and help him get what he believes needs done in our nation and government.
When the Lord establishes his rule there is going to be a governmental changes as well. There will be judgment and Justice.
Judgment means the execution of the Law. There will be judgment decided based on what God’s Law says is right.
In our country, we know that much of the recent law changes have trended away from God’s Law. But there is coming a day when the mighty God will right the wrongs when he come to rule and reign on the earth recompensing the just retribution for evil deeds.
When Jesus reigns mankind will be forced to acknowledge His rule. Psalm 2:9 “Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” 2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”
Justice - Righteousness and honesty.
The justice of the Mighty God will be easy to see. It will be consistent with His godly character and Law. Deuteronomy 32:4 “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: For all his ways are judgment: A God of truth and without iniquity, Just and right is he.”
There will be no under the table dealings. The Mighty God will be sticking to the Law.

Why don’t we see God judging or recompensing NOW? Galatians 6:7–8“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”
There is a lot of lawlessness going on in our world right now. i.e. immorality, theft, looting, disrespect of elders and parents.
There are children and women being enslaved in sex-trafficking.
There are people in power who seem to get away with everything.
God is longsuffering to us-ward waiting for mankind to repent.
Why is their suffering?
There are people starving in war and disaster stricken countries and states.
There are wars and wickedly oppressive regimes.
There are untimely deaths, broken marriages, accidents, and sicknesses.
Sin is the source of suffering. Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” Romans 8:2 What about people who are born handicapped? Diabetes? Cancer? Sometimes God allows sufferings not as a direct result of your sin, but as a general reason because of living in a sin cursed world.
But God is there through suffering. 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”
Suffering is designed to help us realize we need God and hopefully help us avoid eternal suffering by repenting and turning to Jesus Christ in faith.
How could man that is sinful ever receive God’s mercy and kindness?
It is in Jesus Christ alone that I can become an object of God’s love.
For Christ took the just wrath of God the Father upon himself for me and you. He loves us folks and in his merciful kindness cleanses us of all sin and enables us to walk righteously before him in love. Ephesians 1:4 “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:”
My friend you can receive salvation in Christ too, for the Bible states Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Repent of your sins and turn in faith to Jesus Christ. Recognize no amount of self-reformation can save you, only the shed blood of Jesus Christ can atone for your sins against a just God who demands sinless perfection. 1 Peter 1:19 “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

May we be as Daniel who understood that God was His judge. He didn’t act in accordance to the standards of the culture in which He lived. He lived by the God’s standard because He knew God was His judge. Romans 13:1–2 “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”
Obey the rules of men as long as they are not asking you to disobey God.
Obey the rules of God when man’s rules contradict God’s rules.
We are not out picking what to obey based on how we feel.
Flee to Christ. Run to Christ when you are feeling pressured to wrong.
VERSE 1: I run to Christ when chased by fear and find a refuge sure. “Believe in me,” His voice I hear; His words and wounds secure. I run to Christ when torn by grief and find abundant peace. “I too had tears,” He gently speaks; Thus joy and sorrow meet.
While recompense will be upon the ungodly. It will also be upon the righteous for good. We who are in Christ Jesus are admonished not to be weary in well for in due season we shall reap if we fain not.
Remember the recompense of justice upon our sin is just. But realize also the purpose Jesus came to die for the payment for our sins.
Ron Hamilton’s Born to Die #66 Praises II
Praise the Mighty God, O Christian, for his merciful kindness is great towards us. Sinners condemned made righteous in the blood of their Redeemer.
CONCLUSION
While some claim ignorantly that Christ is not God. We know from the Scriptures that Christ is not only the Mighty God in name, but also in what he does. He Reveals himself as the God man. He rules the world. He recompenses justly.
My friend are you under his mercy because you trusted Him as your Savior, or are will you receive justice upon your sin and be judged eternally. Are you judging yourself unworthy of eternal life or will you run to Christ the Mighty who can save you.
The Mighty God is not there just for Salvation, but will also give you aid through His rule in your life. For he gives grace to the humble. He will also richly reward those who diligently seek Him.
