John 5:1-30. Do you want to be healed? Recap. Jesus healed the official’s son.
Jesus goes to Jerusalem for a feast, (map sheep gate) and pool Bethesda house of mercy. Map.
Verse 4 is not in my translation (It might have been added to explain why people were lying there and history of the pool). Jesus asks an amazing question, to a man that have been invalid 38 years. “Do you want to be healed?”
Like the Nicodemus and the woman and the well, the man looks at his condition and explains to Jesus why he can’t be healed. (He does not know who is asking and what Jesus is able to the reader dose because of the story we read last time).
Jesus does not explain, who he is or that he is going to heal him he just with his words: Get up take you bed and walk. And imitelt he gets up takes his bed and walks. (Wow, Jesus has that power in his word). Lord of the body, made for and threw Jesus.
Before we move on, Jesus’ question remains to this day: Do you want to be healed?
Well of course I do, one might say, are you sure? Like the people in John 3. That like the darkness, and hated the son, they did not want healing. When we look in our life do, we really what healing and change? Ore are we more comfortable doing what we want?
In a passage in Mark 10:51 Jesus asks what do you want me to do? (to a blind man I would be obvious what he would want).
In both cases Jesus is not asking because he does not know, he might be asking so they and we can reflect on what is it that I would like Jesus to do? And what would that look like and how will that impact and change my life to life for Him. (What do we really what? Reveals idols, and calls us to repent and turn to Jesus).
In the coming passages I was wondering if Jesus is looking to stir up trouble, Jesus heals on a sabbath, he knows that the Jews (leaders) will angry and Jesus’ teaching afterwards will make the so angry they want to kill him.
The man that is healed is walking with his bed, and is accused by the Jews, and the text shows how little this man knows about Jesus, not really anything. There Jews has no concern for the healed man or rejoicing and praising God that he was healed, that shows something is not right, the focus on the manmade rule, instead of the miracle of God a sign of what Jesus has done. Becomes the point of accusations. That is how different Jesus is, he heals the man. (The Jews defend a system they made and did not rejoice with the healed man and gave praise to God). (Trust in works or God.)
Jesus finds the man in the temple and gives him a warning, don’t sin anymore more, that that nothing worse may happed to you. (Jesus does not heal and die for sin so we can keep sinning false gospel – sin is rips us away from God, and hurts us and people around us.) It would indicate that sometimes sin can cause physical problems, - and we know this, in our experience, bad choices sin, dose cause physical pain and suffering and mental as well. (Note: Not all physical pain is cause by sin).
The man then goes and tells the Jews that it was Jesus that healed him, Why?Seems like he knows that Jesus would get in to trouble, he might what to clear him self of the accusations that the Jews made against him. (selfishness and not taking responsibility, or you can be healed by Jesus and not have new life in him). John adds a statement; that is why the Jews was precutting Jesus because he was healing on the sabbath, Adding Jesus statement on the matter; That my Father is working until now and I am working. Clamming to be God, - the one that works and I allowed to hold creation together – Hebrews.
A statement that just makes the Jews want to kill Jesus, because he was saying God was his father making him equal with God. Blasphemy. Jesus will now expand and explain – his relationship with the father God.
Amen Amen, the son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees God the father doing. Therefore, Jesus is not just making things up. The son does whatever the Father does. The Fater loves the son and shows him all that he is doing. And God the Father will show greater works to make the people marvel. The father raises the death and gives them life (Prophets), - the son will give life to who he will. (Jesus’ life and mission to give life to people that is what only God can do). (Jesus submits and obeys the Father that Loves the son and what Him to be honored).
Judgment – Oh we don’t like it in the modern western world, - it is all about trolance and inclusion. I think we don’t like judgment in the west, because we know we are guilty, it is much easy to say there is no truth, why, because then we can’t be judged. It shows hypocy: (Unless we have been sined against or got our things taken stolen so on… Grace and mercy on me and not others. God can’t judge me, Oh, Yes, he can and should, or he would be a horrible God, unjust ect.)
The point John withes that God has given judgment to the Son, that people should honor the Son, like that Father. (This is a clam to be God, psalms today).
The one that does not honor the son does not honor the father, who send the son to the world. (Rejection of the Jesus is rejecting God).
Judgement or eternal life. Jesus explains Amen Amen, the one that hears my words, and belives in the one that sent me has eternal life, - and has passed from death to life, and is not condemned. (The passage seems like an explanation of John 3 passage with a little more detail).
God that father and the son has true life in them self, Amen Amen the son will speak and the people that hear the son will live. The son is able to give life/new life, new creation. From death to life. (Now)
The son of man - has a voice that will rase all the people and Judged them when they hear his voice, some that has done good to resurrected life. Others to judgement, the one that has done evil.
This weeks passage is not just about one man getting healed, there is a much bigger question, the one John wants his readers to find, who is Jesus.
In this passage, Jesus is the one that heals, he is equal to God, he has power from God to give life to people that are death, we see the Fater loves the son, we see the son honor the father and the father honor the son, we se a glimpses of what and how God works.
The question remains from the beginning? Do you want to be healed? Do you want life? Do you want everlasting life? Then hear Jesus listen to Him, tourn to him, trust in Him. New life, everlasting life, not Judgement because Jesus paid for that.
Or still death, everlasting judgment, our choice, who do we listen to? Do we hear the words of Jesus, and believe in the one that send him?
(Jesus can do it but do you/we want it?) Jesus as son of God. Jesus doing what He sees God does. Jesus as the judge – that He might be praised. As he is praising God. Jesus as the only way to God. Able to give life, from death.
