Sermon Title: "Faithful and Steadfast in Christ"

Key Verse: Colossians 2:5 (NKJV)

"For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ."

Introduction: Faithful and Steadfast in Christ

Good order and steadfastness. These two qualities—discipline and unwavering faith—are the marks of a believer whose life reflects the transforming power of Jesus Christ. In Colossians 2:5, Paul writes to a church he has never met in person, yet he expresses a deep connection with them. Imagine a father writing a letter to his children, rejoicing in their accomplishments and encouraging them to continue in the values he instilled. That’s the heart of this verse: Paul, though physically absent, feels a spiritual closeness with the Colossians, rejoicing in their faith and discipline.
This passage speaks to the reality of our faith journey. We may not always have visible leaders or constant external encouragement, but our foundation in Christ and connection with fellow believers provide the strength we need to stand firm. Paul’s words remind us that steadfastness and good order in our faith are not merely personal achievements—they are a testimony to others and a reason for rejoicing in the body of Christ.
To bring this into focus, consider the image of a well-built house on a strong foundation. The architect may not always be present to oversee its upkeep, but the design and materials ensure its longevity. Similarly, our faith must be firmly rooted in Christ and built with the materials of discipline, unity, and steadfastness.
Today, we’ll explore seven key principles inspired by this passage to help us develop lives of spiritual discipline and unshakable faith. These truths are not just for personal growth—they’re a call to live as a testimony of God’s grace, to encourage others, and to bring glory to Christ.
So let’s step into this journey, guided by Paul’s words and the wisdom of Scripture, and discover what it means to live faithfully and steadfastly in Christ.

Point 1: The Presence of Spiritual Connection

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 5:3 (NKJV) "For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged as though I were present him who has so done this deed."
Illustration: A soldier stationed overseas writes letters to their family, expressing love and encouragement despite being far away. Although separated by distance, their connection remains strong through communication and shared values.
Message: Just as the soldier’s love for their family transcends physical presence, Paul’s spiritual connection with the Colossians reminds us that in Christ, we are united no matter the distance.
Additional Scriptures:
Philippians 1:7 (NKJV): "Just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace."
Romans 12:5 (NKJV): "So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another."
Illustration: A family separated by oceans still feels deeply connected through love and communication, like Paul’s connection to the Colossians.
Application: Even when physical distance separates us, the bond of faith keeps us united in spirit.

Point 2: Rejoicing in Good Order

Key Verse: Colossians 2:5 (NKJV) "Rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ."
Illustration: A teacher walks into a classroom where students are diligently working on their assignments, following instructions without constant oversight. The teacher feels proud, knowing the students have internalized the values of discipline and responsibility.
Message: When our lives are in good order—aligned with God’s Word and walking in obedience—it reflects maturity in faith, and it brings joy to others, including spiritual leaders.
Additional Scriptures:
1 Corinthians 14:40 (NKJV): "Let all things be done decently and in order."
Proverbs 4:26-27 (NKJV): "Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil."
Illustration: A military drill showcases disciplined, orderly movements, highlighting strength and purpose.
Application: A church or individual life in "good order" reflects a disciplined, Christ-centered walk that brings glory to God.

Point 3: Steadfastness in Faith

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NKJV) "Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong."
Illustration: During a hurricane, a large oak tree withstands the storm because its roots go deep into the soil. In contrast, a smaller tree with shallow roots is easily uprooted.
Message: A faith deeply rooted in Christ remains steadfast during trials and challenges, just like the oak tree in the storm.
Additional Scriptures:
James 1:12 (NKJV): "Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him."
Hebrews 10:23 (NKJV): "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful."
Illustration: A lighthouse standing firm amidst crashing waves symbolizes unwavering faith.
Application: Faith rooted in Christ withstands storms of doubt and persecution.

Point 4: Christ as the Foundation

Key Verse: Colossians 2:6-7 (NKJV) "Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith."
Illustration: A house built on a solid concrete foundation survives an earthquake, while another built on unstable ground collapses. The foundation determines its strength and longevity.
Message: When Christ is our foundation, our lives remain stable and unshaken, even in life’s toughest times.
Additional Scriptures:
1 Corinthians 3:11 (NKJV): "For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."
Ephesians 2:20-22 (NKJV): "Having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone."
Illustration: A house built on solid rock withstands storms, unlike one on sand (Matthew 7:24-27).
Application: Strengthen your foundation in Christ through prayer, study, and fellowship.

Point 5: Joy in Others’ Faith

Key Verse: Philippians 1:27 (NKJV) "Whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit."
Illustration: A coach watches their athlete excel in a competition. The coach isn’t competing themselves but takes great pride in the athlete’s success, knowing they played a part in their growth.
Message: Seeing others grow in faith and live out the gospel should bring us immense joy, just as Paul rejoiced in the steadfastness of the Colossians.
Additional Scriptures:
3 John 1:4 (NKJV): "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth."
1 Thessalonians 3:8-9 (NKJV): "For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord. For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God."
Illustration: A parent delights in seeing their child succeed, just as Paul rejoices in the Colossians’ faith.
Application: Celebrate and encourage the spiritual growth of others in your community.

Point 6: The Power of Spiritual Leadership

Key Verse: Philippians 1:27 “Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,” (NKJV)
Illustration: A mentor invests time and wisdom into a young professional, guiding them to success. Even when the mentor isn’t physically present, the lessons imparted continue to guide the mentee’s decisions.
Message: A strong spiritual leader equips others to walk faithfully, even in their absence, just as Paul’s leadership influenced the Colossians.
Additional Scriptures:
Hebrews 13:17 (NKJV): "Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account."
1 Peter 5:2-3 (NKJV): "Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly."
Illustration: A shepherd guides and protects the flock, even from a distance.
Application: Leaders inspire, encourage, and equip others, even when apart physically.

Point 7: Living Faithfully in Christ

Key Verse: Psalm 1:3 (NKJV) "He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season."
Illustration: A gardener tends to a vine, ensuring it is watered, pruned, and supported by a sturdy trellis. Over time, the vine grows strong and produces abundant fruit because of the consistent care it received.Message: When we stay connected to Christ, the true Vine, our lives will naturally bear fruit, reflecting His work in us.
Additional Scriptures:
John 15:5 (NKJV): "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."
Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV): "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."
Illustration: A tree planted by streams of water bears fruit in every season (Psalm 1:3).
Application: Cultivate a life that remains vibrant and fruitful through constant connection with Christ.

Conclusion: A Call to Live Faithfully and Steadfastly

As we reflect on Paul’s encouragement to the Colossians, let’s bring this message into our own lives. Picture a marathon runner nearing the finish line—tired, maybe even struggling, but pressing on because the goal is worth it. In life, we may face trials, distractions, and weariness, but our faith in Christ is the foundation that keeps us moving forward.
Think of a real-life example of someone who lived steadfastly in faith: Corrie ten Boom, who, despite the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp, remained rooted in Christ, forgiving her enemies and sharing the gospel even after enduring unimaginable hardship. Her life was a testimony of good order and steadfastness in faith, inspiring countless others to trust in Jesus.
What about us? How can we stand firm in our faith and live lives of discipline that glorify God? It starts with small, intentional steps—consistent prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and a heart surrendered to Christ. Like a lighthouse standing firm in a storm, our faith can be a beacon of hope to others, drawing them closer to Jesus.
As we leave this place today, may Paul’s words encourage us to stay united, disciplined, and unwavering in our walk with Christ. Whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, let’s commit to living lives that reflect His grace and truth.
