Introduction
Faith vs. Calculated Risk
Good morning, church! Today, I want to open with a question that goes right to the heart of how we live out our belief in God: Are we walking by faith, or are we merely calculating our risks?
The Bible tells us, “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). But let’s be honest—how often do we find ourselves doing the opposite? We evaluate our decisions based on probabilities, logic, and outcomes we think we can control. We step forward when the numbers add up, when the path seems clear, or when we feel like the reward outweighs the risk. But is that what faith looks like?
Faith calls us to trust in the Word of God, even when the odds don’t seem to be in our favor. It calls us to believe in His promises, even when our circumstances tell us otherwise. Calculated risk, on the other hand, is rooted in self-reliance. It’s our human way of making decisions based on what we can see, predict, and measure.
But here’s the key difference: Calculated risk keeps you in control. Faith, however, puts God in control. Calculated risk asks, “What can I manage?” while faith asks, “What has God promised?”
As we start our journey to the land that God has given us to possess, I couldn’t think of a better book for this year than the book of Joshua. we’re going to explore a pivotal moment when Joshua had to choose between faith and calculated risk. My prayer is that by the end of this message, we’ll be reminded that trusting in God’s Word is the foundation of a life that not only pleases Him but also unlocks His power and provision.
As we dive into the book of Joshua we start with 5 proclamations that God makes to Joshua that should cause us to walk in faith and not fear.

4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.
9 And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one. 10 The whole land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. But Jerusalem shall remain aloft on its site from the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. 11 And it shall be inhabited, for there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction. Jerusalem shall dwell in security.
16 Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths. 17 And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, there will be no rain on them.

Standing next to me

And now that power lives in me

Joshua 1:7–8 (ESV)
7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
