John 6:15-59 Recap: From last time, Jesus withdrew to the mountain to avoid being forced to be king, after he made bread and fish for the 5000 people, it is getting late so the disciples start sailing back to Capernaum.
John 6: 16-21. Why this story about Jesus’ walking on water? John does not commentate as he doses sometimes, but he does show Jesus as the Jesus the better Moses, Elija, Elisa. They get God to part the water. Jesus walks on it. God used most of the night to part the sea for Moses and the people, Jesus walked on is and showed he is Lord of creation. - Master of the elements. Jesus has changed water to wine, healed sick and lame people, and now walks on water. He walks on the fears of many people, he is above the fear and chaos of the disciples. And Calms them saying don’t be afraid. It is me I am is here. (Have you heard that from Jesus? When many fears creep in to your mind? To steal life abounded with Jesus from you.)
Why? What did it create in the disciples? What does this story stir up in you?
The disciples received Jesus gladly – and arrived immediately PPT, - like good wine, why good wine, why more food than needed? Why did the boat arrive at once? Blessing, fast track, no more to learn today? They are blessed to be ready for the next day?
22-24 The people that eat bead go looking for Jesus, he is not there but he should be because the disciples left in the ship alone, so they go to Capernaum to seek Jesus. And in 25 they ask when Jesus came.
Jesus does not say, well when I was done praying, I walked on the water to prank my disciples, and scare them, and we got there last night. No in true Jesus’ way, he gets to the core of why the people are seeking him. In other words, they seek Jesus because he filled their stomachs. But they don’t understand his sign. And Jesus will now explain it, citing Isaha: work for food that endures to eternal life, and that life will be given by the Son of Man, the one God the Father. (Where are we looking for truth/worth/life – What are we living for?)
28 Jesus just said they should work for true food, the people ask a good question, what must we do to be doing the works of God?
29. What Jesus say is simple yet for so many very hard to do: “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom He has sent. (That is the only “work”, that is too easy, well as we see in the text, it is very hard/impossible). Instead of doing what Jesus said, they ask for a one more sign, showing that they are more concerned about the food, they give Manna and Moses as and example. (In other words, feed us daily so we don’t have to work for our food. They misunderstand what God did for Moses and that generation, and what Jesus just told them. (And Jesus had just told them to believe not ask for one more sign just yesterday he showed them a great sign, that Jesus can create bread and fish, but it did not create faith in them. Faith based on sighs will require signs all the time or more). Jesus was leading them to have faith in Him, and that God send him so they would not need signs all the time but would trust and have faith in Jesus was send by God.
In 32. Jesus has to explain that Moses did not give them bread, but it was God the father that did and that he also now gave the true bread from heaven Jesus. As Marius said last week, the true bread that came down from heaven, explaining in 33 that Jesus is the true bread form heaven and that He gives life to the world. (The bread Moses got, was pointing to God sending Jesus as the true bread form Heaven, the one that would sustain us every day as we abide in Him).
Like the woman at the well, confused not understanding he is talking about himself, the people in 34 say give us thus bread always. (So, we don’t have to work, they are blind and can’t see that Jesus is talking about himself). Jesus was telling them how the would be truly satisfied, not about the bred as normal food. (Is out joy and satisfaction found in being with Jesus in him?)
Jesus in 35 /teaching/ in the synagogue at Capernaum, that will not be popular and people will stop following Jesus. (truth is more important that – upsetting people, and more loving).
Jesus will state: “I am the bread of life; whoever come to me, shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. (This seems to be in a spiritual sense, more than just bread and drink).
36. Jesus say: You have seen me, yet you don’t believe in me. (Sight and signs are not grantee for faith) Jesus points out their failure to see who He is.
37 All the father gives Jesus will come to Jesus, and he will not cast them away, because Jesus came to do his fathers will, 39 the father will is, to lose nothing of what he has given the son, but raise it up on the last day. (Like the snake in the wilderness) 40 that all that looks to the son and believes in him should have eternal life, and be raised up on the last day.
The objection and grumbling: a logical one: 41-42. This is Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. Therefore, he can’t be from heaven. (John instead of clearing up the mystery – well, read Luke he explains it), Jesus words and signs and his clams speak for them self, even if they don’t understand his origin and family.
43 Jesus respond, don’t grumble among your selves, - no one can come to me unless the Farther who send me draws him. If you don’t know who God is how can you know the son, Jesus explaining how God will draw people to Himself, (One of the mysteries of the faith, but we can read the scriptures and find out many things about God and God can draw people to God that way, and others).
And Jesus repeats I will raise him up on the last day. And in 45 That the ones that understand and here truly hear from God will be instructed by him (Isa 54:), that the Holy Spirt will teach about God, from the scripture and they will come to Jesus. 46 Jesus explain that it is not because people have seen God the father, the Spirt will teach and only Jesus has seen the father.
47 Amen, Amen. Whoever believes has eternal life restate it – hope good news for the people, 48 - Jesus restate I am the bread of life. 49 The ones that ate manna, died, - 50 – This bread me that comes from heaven, has come that you might eat of it and not die.
51. – Jesus again saying I am the living bread, that come form heaven, if anyoneeats of this bread he will live forever, - the bread is I give for the life of the world is my flesh. (Life and Jesus’ death on the cross, resurrection). The gospel. This is the plan of God, -
52: Again, focused on the physical, the Jews respond; What how can he give us his flesh to eat?
Jesus not explaining pushes the metaphor even more (This would be how John explains what the Lords supper is). 53: Jesus following their fears, starts to explain what the lords supper will be, and what it is that one dose in remembering what Jesus did in giving up his flesh to die for the world.
56 apart of abiding in Jesus to remember and celebrate Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. The food and what would give eternal life is trusting in Jesus and feast on him daily. Trusting in his provision, his life, death, resurrection, to bring us to eternal life, and Him being our true sustainer.
57-58 Eternal life- how to have eternal life.
The work of God (that is true food) is to believe in Jesus who he sent. For anyone, whoever, all that the father draws, Abiding in Jesus and Jesus in us - Eternal life, raised from death, - great hope (Jesus about himself and the father. Jesus feeds 5000 men, - and walks on water. Jesus better manna, - and ruler of the elements. (Last time and this time, the true bread). Jesus body the way to God, - the way to say in God. To Abide in him.
