Let no one pass judgment on you (16) 2. Let no one disqualify you (18) Four questions: • What is the nature of the pressure? • What is the motive of the pressure? • What is the result of the pressure? • How can we resist the pressure? What is the nature of the pressure? Answer: add to Christ 1. Valid practices, no longer required (16) 2. Invalid attempts to gain spirituality (18) What is the motive of the pressure? Answer: stopping the flesh • Appears wise and “spiritual” • Is worthless in stopping the “filling of the flesh” What is the result of the pressure? Answer: diminishing Christ • Ignores the “Substance” for a shadow (17) • Ignores connection with Christ for arrogance (18–19) • Ignores union with Christ for tangible regulations (20) How can we resist the pressure? Answer: hold fast to Christ • Prize Christ as the substance of your faith (17) • Set your mind on Christ’s work in and for you (19, 3:1ff) • Cherish union with Christ (20)
