Gethsemane Youth Ministry
Call to Order
Prayer
Good Morning,
I called you all here today so that we as a team can get some training on what it truly means to practice
Excellence on Purpose-
I want to start by reading this theme scripture from Daniel 6:3
Daniel 6:3 (ESV)
3 Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.
Today we are talking about what “Excellence on Purpose” in Youth Ministry.
I love what the Bible says in this verse.
Daniel 6:3
Daniel 6:3 (ESV)
3 Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.
The Bible says that Daniel had an excellent Spirit “IN HIM”
Can I submit to you that You can not begin the process of practicing “Excellence on Purpose” until Excellence is INSIDE 0F YOU.
AND THIS IS WHAT MY ASSIGNMENT IS TODAY. IT’S TO DISCUSS WITH YOU FROM THE SUBJECT
“YOUR MINDSET MATTERS” Cultivating a winning Mindset for Ministry Leadership
The reason why your mindset is important is because,
“YOUR MINDSET SHAPES YOUR GAME”
A writer by the name of Donavan Daniel Cuna stated in an article “Having a mindset for excellence means to decide to be the best and to do what it takes to honor this decision.”
and so today, it is my hope that When you leave this session, I would like you to have a clear understanding of what the right MINDSET is to be successful at this church.
The first type of Mindset that is important in Leadership is
1. A Ministry-Driven Mindset
The first type of Mindset that is important in Leadership is
1. A Ministry-Driven Mindset
a.Understands that ministry Is Not a Job, but a Calling
a.Understands that ministry Is Not a Job, but a Calling
I wanted to start here, because I want it to CHALLENGE your mindset, and attitude regarding coming here.
1. WE DON’T HAVE TO DO MINISTRY,
WE GET TO DO MINISTRY
Ministry is not something we do to earn a paycheck;
it is a divine calling to serve God and His people.
Charles Bridges: “The sum of our whole labor in this kind is to honor God and to save men.”
Not all churches of our contexts have an active youth ministry as we do. and not all of them are inclusive enough to let people LEAD.
God allows us to do this.
B. Ministry Is Not a Competition, but a Collaborative Effort
Ministry is not about impressing others or outdoing peers—it’s about building God’s kingdom together.
So AO is not competing with TX
Children’s ministry is not competing with Children’s Bible Study
Youth Bible study is not competing with Transformation.
WE ARE ALL WORKING TOGETHER.
IN YOUTH MINISTRY AND OUTSIDE OF YOUTH MINISTRY.
-YOUTH MINISTRY IS NOT COMPETING WITH MISSIONS,
WORSHIP AND ARTS IS NOT COMPETING WITH SPECIAL PROJECTS
NO WE ARE ONE BODY SERVING THE SAME GOD
Deborah Rodriguez: “The minute you begin to compete, you are no longer serving God but yourself.”Biblical Example: Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 3:6-9—“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.”
Ministry requires unity and shared purpose, not rivalry.
C. Ministry Is Not About Us; It’s About What You Can Do for Others
C. Ministry Is Not About Us; It’s About What You Can Do for Others
Key Idea: Ministry demands a selfless focus on others, following the example of Jesus.
Biblical Example: Mark 10:45—“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
A ministry-driven mindset seeks opportunities to serve and uplift others, reflecting the heart of Christ.
So our mindset can not be, “What gethsemane is not doing for us, but should be, How can we contribute to gethsemane”
I say all the time, IF IT DOES NOT HAVE TO DO WITH GROWING AND DEVELOPING THESE CHILDREN, IT DOES NOT MATTER.
SO WE HAVE A MINSITRY DRIVEN MINDSET, THEN WE HAVE A
II. Growth-Driven Mindset
II. Growth-Driven Mindset
Definition: The belief that skills and abilities can improve through learning and effort.
Definition: The belief that skills and abilities can improve through learning and effort.
Leaders with a growth mindset seek constant improvement and development.
At least every quarter you aught be asking yourself, “What can I do better?”
A. Growth Requires Effort and Learning
A. Growth Requires Effort and Learning
Explanation: A growth-driven mindset prioritizes learning and development for the leader and their team.Leaders who embrace this mindset foster innovation, adaptability, and resilience.
There are always ways you can be looking to grow. (Spiritually and Naturally)
B. Practical Steps to Cultivate Growth
Embrace Feedback: Seek constructive criticism to improve. (Not every one who gives feedback is against you.
Be okay with accepting feedback.
Commit to Lifelong Learning: Read, attend seminars, and engage in mentoring.
Spiritual Growth: embrace the idea of coming to church. Not just serving in church
“The most important meeting we can go to is on sunday morning and wednesday night.
Naturally: Podcasts/ youtube.
Find something to watch or listen to that will contribute to your growth and success as a leader.
Celebrate Progress: Recognize small steps of improvement in yourself and others. - even though we are not where we want to be, we are definitely not where we used to be.
so we have
1. A ministry- driven mindset
2. A growth-driven mindset
3. A Purpose/Value driven Mindset
3. A Purpose/Value driven Mindset
Key Idea: Leaders must know their “why” to inspire and guide effectively.
Simon Sinek says: "Finding WHY is a process of discovery, not invention." Your WHY is something that already exists within you or your organization, not something that you create from scratch.

11:00 meeting
Good Morning,
I called you all here today so that we as a team can get some training on what it truly means to practice
Excellence on Purpose-
I want start this by giving you some statistics on Youth as a whole.
So as you know,
We serve mostly
Generation Z and Generation Alpha
Gen z- are Ages 13- 28
Gen Alpha is 12 and under
According to WTKR -
There were 94 Homicides in the Hampton Roads Just last year,
and of those 19 Juveniles were killed.
Gen Z is known as the most un religious group in Louisiana.
I say all of that to say
This community needs us.
Our youth needs us
our parents needs us.
and We need each other.
But the only way we will be successful is if we learn to practice Excellence on Purpose.
Reflective Questions:
what does “Excellence on purpose” mean to you as an individual
Divide the tables together to give a working definition of what excellence on purpose means?
We just learned a lot from this Game of Taboo: and to win this game, it takes us understanding what it means to be Excellent on purpose as a youth ministry
Excellence on Purpose: Our Church Team’s Commitment
Excellence on Purpose: Our Church Team’s Commitment
1. Consistency: The Foundation of Excellence
1. Consistency: The Foundation of Excellence
Excellence starts with consistency. It is not just about doing things well once, but doing them well consistently over time. For our church to thrive and reflect the excellence that God calls us to, it’s crucial that we show up, remain faithful, and uphold high standards in every area.
Actions:
In Your Attendance:
Just as the Bible calls us to not forsake the gathering of believers (Hebrews 10:25), consistency in attendance is essential. When one of us is missing, the whole team is impacted. Regular attendance to meetings, events, and church services reflects our commitment to the ministry and to one another.Verse to Reflect On: Hebrews 10:25 – “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”
In Your Timeliness:
Being on time demonstrates respect for God’s work and for one another. Whether it’s arriving early for a meeting, being prepared for events, or arriving on time for worship service, punctuality speaks to our discipline and commitment to serving with excellence.Verse to Reflect On: Colossians 3:23 – “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”
In Your Role:
Each of us has a specific role within the team, and excellence in our ministry means consistently fulfilling that role. It’s about showing up prepared, knowing what’s expected, and executing with the best of our ability. We each contribute to the success of our church’s mission, and when we all fulfill our roles well, the whole team benefits.Verse to Reflect On: 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 – “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit... But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”
2. Clear Communication: Being On the Same Page
2. Clear Communication: Being On the Same Page
Communication is key to ensuring that we are all moving in the same direction. Clear communication means that everyone on the team understands the vision, their individual responsibilities, and how to work together toward the common goal. Without clear communication, even the most gifted team can become disjointed.
Actions:
Open and Transparent Communication:
We must foster an environment of trust and openness where everyone feels comfortable sharing thoughts, challenges, and ideas. Whether it’s sharing a concern about an event or celebrating a victory, communication should flow freely.Bible Reference: Proverbs 15:23 – “A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!”
Clarity of Roles:
Clear communication ensures that we all know our roles and responsibilities. When expectations are clearly defined, we can avoid confusion and maximize our impact.Bible Reference: 1 Corinthians 14:33 – “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.”
Regular Check-ins and Feedback:
We must have consistent check-ins to make sure we’re all aligned on our goals and tasks. Regular feedback helps us stay on track and allows us to adjust when necessary.Bible Reference: Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
3. Promote Collaboration: Supporting One Another
3. Promote Collaboration: Supporting One Another
As a team, we are called to be in this ministry together. When one person has an event or a project, it’s not just their event—it’s everyone’s event. Our success is tied to how well we work together and support each other. The Bible tells us to bear one another’s burdens and to work as one body.
Actions:
Unified Purpose:
Whether we are planning a youth event, a service, or an outreach, it’s important to remember that we’re all working toward the same goal: glorifying God and serving our community.Bible Reference: Philippians 1:27 – “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.”
Team Support:
Supporting one another goes beyond just showing up—it’s about offering help, encouragement, and prayer. If someone is struggling, we rally together. If someone has a great idea, we support it wholeheartedly.Bible Reference: Galatians 6:2 – “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
Celebrating Collective Wins:
When one person wins, we all win. We will celebrate each other’s accomplishments, no matter how big or small, because the success of one person is the success of the whole team.Bible Reference: Romans 12:15 – “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.”
4.Encourage Creativity: Be Fresh—God Is Doing a New Thing
4.Encourage Creativity: Be Fresh—God Is Doing a New Thing
God is always doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:19), and as a church, we must remain open to fresh ideas, new approaches, and creative solutions. Excellence on purpose requires a willingness to embrace the creativity that comes from God, who is the ultimate Creator.
Actions:
Embrace New Ideas:
Encourage everyone to bring new ideas to the table. Whether it’s a new event, a new way of worship, or a new outreach strategy, we should be open to exploring creative ways to reach people and grow in our faith.Bible Reference: Isaiah 43:19 – “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”
Innovative Problem Solving:
When faced with challenges, we need to approach them with fresh perspectives. Creativity means thinking outside the box, trusting in God’s guidance, and not being afraid to try new things.Bible Reference: Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Fostering a Creative Environment:
Create a culture where everyone feels safe to express their creativity. This could involve brainstorming sessions, collaborating on ideas, and inspiring each other to think differently.Bible Reference: Romans 12:6 – “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them…”
