Chapter 2: Jews and Gentiles coming together because the dividing wall partition has been knocked down. Jews and Gentiles come near to each other as they come closer to God.
Chapter 4: Unity
Chapter 5: Male and Female brought together in marriage
21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
The previous verses he has described how we are to speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music form your heart to the Lord. Giving thanks always for everything.
Notice that this is not to be expressed individually only. Notice the call for community. I draw this out because their is a growing idea that I live my Christianity by myself and I don’t need to go to church or live in community because I get along with God by myself.
I want to run that thought next to scripture this morning and I especially want to highlight this for our younger generations. As technology pushes to isolate us, we have to compare what the culture says we do with what scripture says and here you see scripture calls us to community.
Remember as he writes this letter from prison all the different backgrounds coming together to live in community.
How do you live in community with all these different backgrounds?
Submitting to one another in the fear of Christ
Submitting:
hypotasso
Self-offering, respect and willingness to serve, to accept directives that are given, to honor conditions that are imposed to place rank under, . It is to position oneself as a servant toward one’s neighbor in the hierarchy of love.
Joe and Donna were doing dishes last Sunday. Joe was busy all morning at the sink for us. After everything was over, I tried to go back to Joe and ask him if he need any help. He said we almost got it done.
A leadership Bible lesson is to submit to one another in the fear of Christ. Self-offering and willingness to serve to place rank under or position oneself as a servant toward another.
Never get to a place where you think you are too good to do anything. Keep a heart of willingness to serve or place rank under.
Can be a challenge for our culture here locally because you might have felt you was always told you were less than and you have to defend yourself. You can lay that attitude down and think Biblically today by having a willingness to serve.
Ephesians: An Introduction and Commentary d. Wisdom to Replace Folly (5:15–21)
There must be a willingness in the Christian fellowship to serve any, to learn from any, to be corrected by any, regardless of age, sex, class, or any other division.
Out of reverence for Christ. All human relationships, as Paul is about to show, find their pattern and meaning and ordered expression under the authority of Christ.
Remembering that Christ made himself the servant of all!
This section following is about the household. Throughout ancient writings the household which also includes extended family is a representation of the larger community.
That is, how the households of a community function is how the community at large will also function.
If you adjust and get the households right, then there will be a health running through the entire community.
31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
Points us back to Genesis and creation. In creation, God brings order from chaos and disorder through creation. He then creates man and woman and brings them together.
In creation, we see God bringing Heaven and Earth together. Here he speaks of husband and wife coming together in Christian marriage. This union is a sign post when done correctly for the rest of the world declaring that God wants to bring all things together.
32 This mystery is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church.
Really want us to read through this passage and think about Christ and the church. Christ is loving, committed, faithful, patient, and kind towards the church.
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord,
23 for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of the body.
24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so wives are to submit to their husbands in everything.
V.22
Husbands and wives are different. Does not mean that wives are less than and Galatians 3:28 makes that clear.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eleven: Heaven in Your Home (Ephesians 5:18–33)
When the Christian wife submits herself to Christ and lets Him be the Lord of her life, she will have no difficulty submitting to her husband. This does not mean that she becomes a slave, for the husband is also to submit to Christ. And if both are living under the lordship of Christ, there can be only harmony. Headship is not dictatorship. “Each for the other, both for the Lord.”
Remember the verse earlier for I am speaking about Christ and the church. Who is the Bride of Christ? The church.
So we too the Bride submit ourselves to Christ.
v.23 the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of the body.
The husband is called to leadership here. Likewise Christ is the head of the church. He Jesus is the Savior of the body.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her
26 to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word.
27 He did this to present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and blameless.
28 In the same way, husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
29 For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church,
The picture of atonement through what Jesus did on the cross. He died to make us holy, to cleanse us to make us His bride.
Imagine a bride on her wedding day in splendor, but holy and blameless
Husbands are to love their own wives just as they love their own bodies.
This is the faithfulness to love a wife faithfully all the days of their lives. Through the changes of life and seasons. The husband is to care for the wife and love her as he does his own body.
Think again of the faithfulness of Christ love for you. Christ has remained faithful in his love for us. He doesn’t stop pursuing us. Through the changes of life Christ loves us. In the different seasons Christ loves us.
Someone who loves his wife loves himself because we are members of one another.
30 since we are members of His body.
31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
32 This mystery is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church.
33 To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.
1 Children, obey your parents as you would the Lord, because this is right.
2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise,
3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.
