John 7:2-31 a 2 part on the Feast of Booth.
Feast of booths or tabernacle – we can read in Lev. 23:33-44. 1. Day Holy assembly, - No, ordinary work solem rest. – 7 days of food offerings to the LORD. 8 day, solem/formal time of rest, A holy assembly and no ordinary work. Rejoice before the LORD 7 days. Fruit and branches from Plam, and willows.
For all time.
Live in booth for 7 days. Know that Israel dwelled in booth, when God brought dem out of Egypt. (I am the LORD your God)
3-5) Jesus family members ask Jesus to leave, and go to Judea, (where we read that people want to kill him). If you are who you say you are then make it open publicly for all to see (and get away from us and the shame you bring on us with your clams). Why would I say the that part, because in 5 is it revealed that his brothers/family did not even believe in him. (Misunderstood by his family)
6-8) Jesus will not try to explain to his brothers, and a saying we have heard before, My time has not yet come. And Jesus contrasts that to his brothers, your time is always here. Because the world does not hate you, therefore you can go up with out getting killed. But world hates me, because I testify about it that his works are evil. My time is not here yet you can go. (Gods timing) (The word’s evil will hate the Holy).
9-10) Jesus stays back and goes up in private incognito, (secret/hidden).
11-13) The people are taking about Jesus, the Jews looking for him, people discussing about Jesus in private, some saying he is a good man, others, no, he is leading the people astray. But not in the open because of the Jews. (What does people say about Jesus? Today and how can you share) (Fear of the Jews what are people fearful of today? What keeps people mumbling?).
14-15) I the middle of the feast Jesus teaches in the temple and the Jews marveled, how can this man teach when he has never studied?  (how did he even get to read? Or write?).
16-19) Jesus’s response is to tell the crowed that His teaching is not his, but from the one who send him, and if anyone of the people listening want to do Gods will, they will know whether Jesus is making this up or he teaches with God’s authority. (18) The one that speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, (oh man that is true today also, online, and in sermons and so on… many are seeking their own glory). But the one who seeks the glory of him who send him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. (Jesus wanting to gloryfi God, speaks the truth, and worlds of life and spirt). Then Jesus rebukes them saying; Moses gave you the law, but none of you keeps the law! Why do you seek to kill me? (Who are you trying to glorify?)
20) The crowed does not respond to the first question, why they all break the law. They will instead respond to Jesus second one with: “you must have a demon, who is seeking to kill you?” – A classic way of not dealing with the fault I have but instead respond with a question and accusation against the opponent. (Do you do that? Find fault in the one that shows you your sin?) (From reading John’s gospel, we know that The Jews are trying to kill Jesus so Jesus is right).
21-24) Jesus will now respond and lay their hyocry open, I healed the man on the Sabath and that is why you want to kill me, but you break the law when you circumcise on the Sabbath, - if you can break the law doing that, why are you angry, I healed a man on the Sabbath. In 24 Jesus appeals to make a right Judgment, it is obvious Jesus is right and they are wrong.  (Is God more about obeying rules or the people God made, the rules are to protect the people not to protect God).  Mercy not an offering.
25-26) They might hear the words of Jesus and say, is this not the one they are trying to kill? And he is teaching openly and not being corrected, does the authorities know he is the Christ?
27-29 but again Jesus prevised family origin is a hindrance for some of the people – because the teaching understood from the OT is that none knows where the Christ comes from. In 28) Jesus does not correct the people, but explain, that he has not come by him self but he was sent, And the one that sent him is true – and that the people don’t know him (Jesus is saying they don’t know God he has said that before). Jesus stating that He knows who sent him. The one the people don’t know. God.
30-31) His words make some what to arrest him, but it did not happen because his hour had not yet come. Opposite to that, many of the people believed in him, or they believed the signs, and asked if the Christ was going to make more signs, that Jesus had done. (Who is Jesus? What is God’s timing?)
The main point of the feast of Booth was to know God. And Jesus is saying that as they are celebrating this festival of knowing and remembering what God did, they don’t know God.
What about you do you know God? The Jesus that John presents to us, that he wants us to believe is the son of God the savior of the word. God. Do you know Him?
