REVIEW QUESTIONS
QUESTION: What evidence of God on earth makes people all accountable to God?
ANSWER: General Revelation
QUESTION: What happens when someone refuses to worship God despite the evidence of Him?
ANSWER: The worship idols
QUESTION: What does it mean to have a depraved mind?
ANSWER: Unable to see the difference between right and wrong
QUESTION: What does it say God does to people in chapter 1 who refuse to honor
He gives them over
The old saying about this is, “When the lights go out on the road to Hell.” This is when the Holy Spirit of God no longer speaks to a man.
When people continually reject God, reject conviction, they will come to a place where the Holy Spirit no longer speaks and God no longer draws you to Him. He lets us go to our own devises.

1) There is no partiality in God’s judgement

Romans 2:1–5 “Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,”
Imagine reading this letter as a Jew and you (being a Jew) had a thing against the Gentiles (as almost all Jews did
They were unclean
They were immoral
They were ungodly
All through chapter 1 you would have been shouting AMEN
That’s right preacher
Them Gentiles are going to feel GOD’S WRATH!
Then Paul turns the argument on them and says, hey YOU have no excuse because you are doing the same thing! (Verse 1)
What same thing?
It would certainly include the vise list from last week in verses 29-32 that we read last week and anything else that God says in sin.
The problem Paul was addressing was that they refused to look upon themselves with the same judgement they used on others
They thought God would condemn the Gentile, who practiced sin, but spare them (even though they practiced sin) because they are God’s people
God’s judgement falls upon anyone (Jew, Gentile, Church member, outsider) “who practices such things” (Verse 2)
QUESTION: What does God base His judgement on?
(v 2) according to truth
Where can we find this truth?
The standard then becomes the same all the way across the board. You can be an atheist, muslim, church attender, preacher, deacon, whoever and all will be judged by the same standard
That is what God calls sin is sin
One Point of Application:
We must be very watchful of hypocritical judgement:
That is when we condemn other people for their sin even though we are do the same and justifying our sin by saying we are God’s people and therefore forgiven.
The point Paul makes is that judgement falls upon sinners. Case closed
Jesus also warned us of this:
Matthew 7:1–2 ““Do not judge so that you will not be judged. “For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.”
QUESTIONS:
What can we do to protect us from violating this principle of hypocritical judgement?
ANSWER: always look at our own lives before we make judgements of others
And what does Paul imply these Romans should do if they are guilty of the same sin?
They should repent
And God gives them a chance to repent, but God’s patience and kindness is not eternal. It does run out when God gives them an opportunity and they refuse to repent

2) God’s judgement begins with own His people

Romans 2:6–11 “who will render to each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God.”
In these verses Paul puts everyone into two categories:
What are the categories?
to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality: eternal life
perseverance: constancy
This is a person who is steadfast in his loyalty to Jesus
This is our calling, and this must characterize our lives.
The whole idea of this statement includes the idea of difficulty
It is not easy to persevere in doing good
Those who do however are rewarded with eternal life
to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness: wrath and indignation
The point is God’s anger will be directed toward those who live this way
These are the people are motivated by their own selfish ambitions, characterized by self-centeredness.
They are only thinking of themselves, their pleasures, their gains, and not God’s glory
Principle: It is a self-centered attitude that often produces a sinful disobedient lifestyle that is hostile to God
And we have always got to consider our temptation to make selfish decisions which are often sinful decisions
Notice where God’s wrath and judgement begins: “to the Jew first and also to the Greek”
Now the point is that God’s judgement will begin with those who know better.
Peter says pretty much the same thing 1 Peter 4:17 “For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?”
Principle: People who know better and still disobey God become the priority of God’s judgement.
People who sit under biblical teaching, preaching, and even reading the Word of God and knowing what they are doing is wrong and still do it are the first to receive God’s wrath and indignation
Luke 12:47–48 ““And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will receive many lashes, but the one who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.”
Because we have heard, our accountability is much higher

3) God will judge us according to the secret things hidden within our hearts

Romans 2:12–16 “For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.”
The point is that the Gentiles who are not God’s people, do not know God’s will, and do not have God’s law are still liable to God’s judgement.
QUESTION: Can you tell me why God has the right to judge people who do not have His Law?
Because God has given every person a conscience, which is a moral guide to right and wrong. This moral guide allows every person to understand God’s basic requirements “so that they do by nature the things of the law”
That means that people who live on a remote Island, and have never heard one word of Scripture still know its wrong to kill people, or to steal things, or to hurt people, or to use people.
God has given every man a conscience, and that conscience either accuses us or defends us
This helps us understand why not all people are thieves, or liars, or commit acts of immorality. There are many people who never step foot into the church who are faithful to their spouse, and work jobs, pay taxes, tell the truth, and good moral people.
They do this because they have a God-given conscience
But this does not mean that they are saved. The point is that the break God’s law, even without having the written law, because God’s law is written on their hearts
“God will judge the secrets of men though Christ Jesus”
that is when all things that are hidden from others, things that our consciences tell us are wrong, are always in plain sight of God
That is when a person does wrong, and outwardly it may not be obvious, but he goes against his conscience, God knows it
And when a person does what is right, and their consciences move them to do the right thing even if no one else knows about it, God sees it and God will reward that person
Mark 4:22 “For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light.”
