Introduction:

Good morning everyone its good to be here today to be able to worship God this morning. Last week we talk about being Salt of the Earth. we look at what it means to be Salt of the Earth, we also look at How Jesus was challenging his followers, and how Christians strive to be Salt of the Earth. this week we are going to be continuing with kind of the same theme. we are going to be looking at the second part today of Mt 5:14-16
Matthew 5:14–16 NKJV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
this week we are going to be looking at what does it mean to be light, another Challenge by Christ, how do we as Christians be a light within the world.

The Compliment, and understanding the Compliment:

Again, we see that Jesus start of by giving a compliment to his followers here in Mt 5:14
Matthew 5:14 NKJV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
From this verse the compliment that Christ give’s here is “you are the light of the world” what does mean for his follower, and us as Christians today? (1st) thing to think about from this compliment is that this verse tells us we are not only participants in God’s plan and purpose, but to some extent we share in the Characteristics God, and Jesus. Lets turn in our Bibles to 1st John 1:5
1 John 1:5 NKJV
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
From this verse here in 1st John we see that John is talking about there is no darkness in God. those that follow God also bring light to darkness. than we also have Christ who states i am the light of the world. Let’s turn in our Bibles to Jn 8:12
John 8:12 NKJV
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
From this verse in the gospel of John we see that Jesus makes this statement. As Christians we understand that without Christ in our life, than we walk in darkness of sin. As Christian’s we are to portrait the light of God, and Christ, which in doing that we must accept God, and Christ. by having faith, our faith leading us to obedience, and our faith and obedience leads us to doing the will of God. Now that we understand that we as Christians share in some of the characteristics God, and Christ. we can also see that contrast between the Salt and Light. As Christian when we are salt we are preventing the world from decaying, and when we as Christians are the light to dispel darkness that comes from the world. As Christians we can come to see another theme within the scriptures the theme of light and dark. Those that Choose to live according to how God wants people to live, live in the light of God, rather than living according to the world, those who choose the world live in the darkness of sin. People of world would reject the words of God, say we live in the age of enlightenment. Lets turn in our Bibles to 1st Cor 4:5
1 Corinthians 4:5 NKJV
5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.
From this passage here Paul is talking to the early church about how God will judge things accordingly. anything that was done in secret will be brought to light. we also understand that people of the world love the darkness of sin more than the light of God’s word. Lets turn in our Bible to Jn 3:19
John 3:19 NKJV
19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
From this verse here we come to understand that people of the world love the darkness. in this life are we going to chose a life in light of God, and Jesus Christ over the life within the world of darkness of sin. today Christians get discourage because of how dark the world can be. there days when we as Christians doubt there is any good left within the world. Lets turn in our Bibles to Phil 2:15-16
Philippians 2:15–16 NKJV
15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.
We understand here in this letter to the early Church Paul is trying to encourage and remind the early church. that it is because God, and Jesus light, and that we as Christians understand that we to share in this by doing the will of God, applying the teaching of Christ and the Apostle to our daily life, and getting to know Christ through the gospels

The Challenge of being a light within the World:

This now leads us to our second point for today which from our main verse in Mt 5:16
Matthew 5:16 NKJV
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
