The triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem
Luke 19:28-46
Luke 19:28-38
Jesus Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to
Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the
hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you
enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever
ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
Luke 19:28-38
31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The
Lord needs it.’”32 Those who were sent ahead went and found
it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its
owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”34 They
replied, “The Lord needs it.”35 They brought it to Jesus, threw
their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.
Luke 19:28-38
36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37
When he came near the place where the road goes down the
Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully
to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the
Lord!”[a]
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Luke 19:41-44
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42
and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what
would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43
The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an
embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every
side. 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children
within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another,
because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
Luke 19:45-46
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out
those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My
house will be a house of prayer’[b]; but you have made it ‘a den of
robbers.’[c]”

Take a donkey
Zechariah 9:9
The nation of Israel longed for it. Rejoice greatly, O
daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of
Jerusalem! Behold, you king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he, humble and
mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

True leadership is rooted in humility.
Leaders are not those who assert themselves over
others, but those who come alongside, serve, and lift
up others.
Mark 10:42-45
"Jesus called them together and said, 'You know that those who
are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their
high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you.
Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your
servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For
even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and
to give his life as a ransom for many.'"
You are called to serve.
Are you putting the needs of others before your own?
Or are you trying to climb ladders for status and
recognition for yourself?

Men are not a means to an end, but are
beloved children of God.

John 2:14-16
14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep
and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15
So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple
courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the
money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who
sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my
Father’s house into a market!”
• Joshua 1:9 - "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and
courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the
Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
• Romans 8:31 - "If God is for us, who can be against us?"
• 1 Peter 3:14 - "But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake,
you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled."
• Matthew 5:10 - "Blessed are those who are persecuted for
righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
Takeaway on leadership:
•
Humility: to serve others rather than seek to be served.
•
Compassion: to weep for the brokenness around us and to
act out of love for those who are lost.
•
Courage: to confront injustice and to do what is right, even
when it is hard.
Luke 15:1-10
Questions:
1. “Why did Jesus choose to ride a colt into Jerusalem instead of a warhorse symbolizing power?
How does this humble act challenge our conventional views of a ‘successful leader’?”
2. “Jesus’ cleansing of the temple (Luke 19:45-46) risked conflict, yet He acted. Where do you draw
the line between ‘courage’ and ‘recklessness’? How do we discern when to speak or act?”
3. “Which part of this passage resonates most with you? In which areas (humility, compassion,
courage) do you need growth?
Luke 15:1-10
Questions:
