INTRODUCTION:

1. "He Leadeth Me"

A. Every organization must have leaders.

Matthew 12:25 NKJV
25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

1. In order for a house or a nation to stand, it cannot be led in two separate directions.

Matthew 6:24 NKJV
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

A. If it is, then the house or nation will be pulled apart.

B. There can be many leaders, but they must all follow one head.

A. This is true of everything in life.

1. A family

1. The husband
Ephesians 5:23 NKJV
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.

2. A business

A. The owner

3. A church

A. Christ
Colossians 1:18 NKJV
18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

4. An Army

A. In America: the President.
B. In other countries: a monarch, dictator, or prime minister.

2. This song is about the leadership of God.

A. But do not mislead yourself--if God is not your leader, Satan is going to be.

1 John 3:8–10 NKJV
8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. 10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

1. One cannot serve God and Satan at the same time.

2. As you sing this song and as you listen to this lesson, ask yourself a question.

A. Are you sure God is your undivided leader?

1. Only you and God can answer this question, because only you and God truly know the answer.
2. My warning to everyone, including myself, is to make sure God's answer to the question is the same as mine.

BODY:

1. "HE LEADETH ME"

A. What does this statement mean? It means you are a follower

1. For some people who lived during Jesus' time, this was literal.

A. The twelve apostles

Matthew 4:18–22 NKJV
18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
1. These men were willing to give up everything to say, "He leadeth me".
A. Peter, Andrew James and John left their nets and family behind.
2. What are we willing to leave behind?
A. Money, fame, family, time, career.
Luke 14:25–33 NKJV
25 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
3. We should be willing to even forsake or deny self to follow Christ.
Luke 9:23 NKJV
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

B. What does "He Leadeth Me" mean for us today?

1. We cannot literally follow Him as the twelve did, but we can follow His example left in the Word of God.

1 Peter 2:21 NKJV
21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

A. The books of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John tell us the story of Jesus and His life.

1. These books show us how He reacted to events and people.
Mark 10:45 NKJV
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
2. These books show us how much He loved God.
John 4:34 NKJV
34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.
John 6:38 NKJV
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
3. These books show us how much time He devoted to serving God.
Luke 19:10 NKJV
10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
John 8:29 NKJV
29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”
Luke 2:49 NKJV
49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
4. These books show what He requires of us to love Him.
John 14:15 NKJV
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
5. These books show what He requires of His friends.
John 15:14 NKJV
14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.

B. If we are going to say "He Leadeth Me" today, we must become like Him to be led by Him.

1 Corinthians 11:1 NKJV
Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
1. To be like Him, we must have His mind in us.
Philippians 2:5 NKJV
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
2. To be like Him, we must be guided by His words as He was guided by the Father's.
Matthew 4:4 NKJV
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
3. To be like Him we must love God as He loved God.
Matthew 22:37–38 NKJV
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment.
4. To be like Him, we must always put God first.
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
5. To be like Him, we must die like Him.
Luke 9:23 NKJV
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

2. "O BLESSED THO'T!"

A. To be led by Him, all of the things we have talked about must be blessed thoughts.

Philippians 4:4 NKJV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!

1. In order to be truly led by Him, you must understand, as He understood, that a life in service to God is the best life possible.

Matthew 5:1–12 NKJV
1 And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

2. When it becomes a blessed thought to live the life Jesus lived, you understand what it means to be led by Him.

John 14:6 NKJV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

A. The only way to the Father is to take Jesus' hand and let Him lead you down the path that few walk.

Matthew 7:13–14 NKJV
13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

3. "O WORDS WITH HEAV'NLY COMFORT FRAUGHT!"

A. When you get to the point where you are ready to take Jesus' hand and be led by Him...

1. His words will comfort you, no matter what He asks of you.

Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 1:3–5 NKJV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.

2. Your worries will vanish.

Matthew 6:33–34 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

3. The last part of this verse will then make sense, if you have Jesus' hand.

4. "WHATE'ER I DO, WHERE'ER I BE, STILL 'TIS GOD'S HAND THAT LEADETH ME."

Philippians 4:11–13 NKJV
11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

A. It does not matter what the circumstances are, if Jesus is the One leading you by His hand.

CONCLUSION:

1. "He leadeth me, He leadeth me, by His own hand He leadeth me: His faithful foll'wer I would be, for by His hand He leadeth me."

A. If this is true, then you have nothing to worry about; He will guide you home and nothing can hurt you.

Romans 8:38–39 NKJV
38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

B. If it is not the case and you are not being led by Jesus, then you have everything to worry about.

2 Thessalonians 1:6–10 NKJV
6 since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
