Text - Luke 4.18-21
18 “the spirit of the lord is upon me, because he anointed me to bring good news to the poor. he has sent me to proclaim release to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
20 And He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him.
21 Now He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

The year of Reception
The year of Reception
This period was marked by Jesus’ preaching and teaching coupled with signs and miracles - Matthew 4.23-25
23 Jesus was going about in all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
24 And the news about Him spread throughout Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and severe pain, demon-possessed, people with epilepsy, and people who were paralyzed; and He healed them.
25 Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
He preached the sermon on the mount
He fed the 5 thousand
He walked on the sea
He calmed the sea
He cast out the legions of demons
He appointed the 12 apostles and sent them
He taught the parables of the kingdom
He complimented John the baptist
Jesus offered Himself to the people - Matthew 11.28-30
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.”
Jesus taught the “bread of life” - John 6.35-40
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me will never be thirsty.
36 But I said to you that you have indeed seen Me, and yet you do not believe.
37 Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out.
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
39 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of everything that He has given Me I will lose nothing, but will raise it up on the last day.
40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
this marked the end of this period
many of His disciples stopped following Him - John 6.58-60
58 This is the bread that came down out of heaven, not as the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread will live forever.”
59 These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.
60 So then many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This statement is very unpleasant; who can listen to it?”
The year of Rejection
The year of Rejection
Who rejected Him?
Who rejected Him?
many of His own disciples - John 6.66
66 As a result of this many of His disciples left, and would no longer walk with Him.
the Jews were now seeking to kill Him - John 7.1
1 After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
Herod wanted to kill Him - Luke 13.31-33
31 At that very time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, “Go away and leave this place, because Herod wants to kill You.”
32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I reach My goal.’
33 Nevertheless I must go on My journey today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a prophet would perish outside Jerusalem.
Jesus began to speak of His coming death and resurrection
Jesus began to speak of His coming death and resurrection
Jesus began to speak of His soon suffering and death - Matthew 16.21
21 From that time Jesus began to point out to His disciples that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem and to suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and to be raised up on the third day.
22 And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be handed over to men;
23 and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.
Jesus showed His disciples His future glory - Matthew 17.1-2
1 Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James, and his brother John, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.
The year of rejection culminated in the death and resurrection of Christ
The year of rejection culminated in the death and resurrection of Christ
They bribed Judas to betray his Master
They paid false witnessed who will testify against Jesus
They blackmailed Pilate to have Jesus crucified
But Jesus gave Himself willingly into their, because THIS was His destiny on earth - Matthew 20.28
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Three Pulls
Three Pulls
The three stages or phases of Christ’s ministry are described by WMB as the three pulls.
three pulls of sthe fishing rod in his vision
First pull - signs and wonders / Year of Revelation
people were amazed and attracted at His miracles
Second pull - discerning of spirits / Year of Reception
Jesus discerned the people’s needs - Matthew 9.36-38
36 Seeing the crowds, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and downcast, like sheep without a shepherd.
37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.
38 Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
Jesus discerned the people’s real intention in following Him - John 6.26-27
26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate some of the loaves and were filled.
27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”
Third pull - Year of Rejection
first part - unveiling of the Word. He spoke openly of Himself
I am the bread of Life
I am the light of the world
I am the Good Shepherd
I am the resurrection and the life
I am the way the truth and the life
I am the Son of God
I am before Abraham
MANY DISCIPLES REJECTED HIM BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT LISTEN TO HIS SERMON
THE REST OF THE JEWS REJECTED HIM BECAUSE THEIR HEARTS HAVE BEEN HARDENED!
spirit of stupor - Romans 11.8-9
8 just as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, Eyes to see not and ears to hear not, Down to this very day.”
9 And David says, “May their table become a snare and a trap, And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
second - preaching to the lost. He rebuked those who did not believe
He rebuked the leaders of Israel
He rebuked the unbelief of the masses
He pronounced Jerusalem’s destruction
Three primary objectives of the Son of Man on earth
Three primary objectives of the Son of Man on earth
to preach the good news - Luke 4.18-19
18 “the spirit of the lord is upon me, because he anointed me to bring good news to the poor. he has sent me to proclaim release to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
through signs and wonders
to fulfill the Law - Matthew 5.17
17 “Do not presume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill.
He expounded the law according to the righteousness of God
He taught with authority
to bear witness to the truth - John 18.37
37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”
He proclaimed the truth
He revealed who He is even if they were offended
The Objects of His Ministry
The Objects of His Ministry
He came to seek and save the lost - Luke 19:10
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
He knew who believed and who did not - John 6.64-65
64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray Him.65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.”
Not everyone who followed who believed Christ went all the way -
Some stopped at the year of revelation
Some continued to the year of Reception and then stopped
The few went all the way to the year of Rejection
66 As a result of this many of His disciples left, and would no longer walk with Him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to leave also, do you?” 68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. 69 And we have already believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.” J
Jesus committed these believers to the Father - John 17:6-14
6 “I have revealed Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have followed Your word. 7 Now they have come to know that everything which You have given Me is from You; 8 for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me. 9 I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on the behalf of those whom You have given Me, because they are Yours; 10 and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 I am no longer going to be in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, so that they may be one just as We are. 12 While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name, which You have given Me; and I guarded them, and not one of them perished except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.
13 “But now I am coming to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
