Have you heard it?
Have you heard it?
Have you heard the most important news in the world, ever?
Have you heard the gospel of Jesus Christ, the simple gospel that Jesus wants everyone to hear?
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
Have you heard the simple gospel of Jesus Christ? For there are many who proclaim things that are not the gospel.
(Transition) This morning we are going to look at the simple gospel that Jesus wants us to hear. It is the most important news, it is the good news. May we consider some preliminary things as we go.
Preliminary considerations
Preliminary considerations
Gospel means good news
Euaggelion (Gk) - use in the New Testament only came as “good tidings;” of Christ and his salvation (ref: Lk2:10)
The gospel is the power of God unto salvation (ref: Rom1:16)
The gospel tells how to be saved from our sins and from the wrath of God to come.
We need to be aware of false gospels
This is nothing new, turn to (Gal1:6-9)
6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
Again we must ask ourselves have we heard the true, simple gospel?
The gospel must be obeyed
Consider (1Pt4:17)
17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
Or turn to (2Th1:6-9)
6 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
(Transition) So, have you heard the simple gospel, have you obeyed the simple gospel, are you sure? May we now set our mind on the gospel itself.
There are things to believe!
There are things to believe!
Jesus died for our sins turn to (1Cor15:1-3)
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
Jesus was buried and rose again continue to read (1Cor15:4-8)
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
Jesus is Lord, Jesus is King
He has been exalted to right hand side of God (Act2:33-36)
He is king of kings, lord of lords (1Tim6:13-15; Rev1:5)
He has all authority in heaven and on earth (Mt28:18, Eph1:20-22)
He is coming again!
He will fulfill His promise, judge the world in righteousness (Act1:9-11)
(Transition) There are things to believe, the final one was of the judgment coming, now comes the call to obey the gospel.
There are commands to obey!
There are commands to obey!
We must believe the gospel
Must believe or be lost (Mk16:15-16)
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
We must believe that Jesus came, lived, died, rose again for our sins (Jn1:29, 3:16, 36, 8:24)
36 “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
So, do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, the lamb of God who came to take away our sins?
We must confess our faith
Confessing is necessary
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Or using the words of Jesus turn to (Mt10:32-33)
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
Confessing is a good confession (ref: 1Tim6:12; Act8:37)
We must repent
Make a decision to turn to Jesus, to turn from our sins and turn to Him!
Jesus wanted repentance to be proclaimed in His name (Lk24:46-47)
46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
The apostles called for it, and many obeyed it immediately (Act2:38, 3:19, 17:30) to name a few.
Have you repented, turned from your works, your sins to Jesus Christ?
We must be baptized for remission of sins
Jesus own words, command
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
His apostles preached it (Act2:38, 22:16)
His apostles preached the significance of baptism (Rom6:3-7) as well as (Gal3:27; Col2:12-13; Tit3:4-7, and 1Pt3:21)
3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin.
Baptism is by immersion (Act8:36) in water. it is greek word “Baptizo” meaning to immerse, to plung, to dip.
Baptism is for repentant believers (Act2:38, 8:36-37)
Baptism is where we call on the name of the Lord to have our sins washed away (Act22:16, Eph1:7 and 1Pt3:21)
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
I mentioned distorted gospel before, many have distorted the simple gospel by removing baptism as essential, something that is to be obeyed. - - - have you been scripturally baptized for the remission of your sins?
We must remain faithful until the end. (Mt28:19-20) learning to keep the commands; (Rev2:10) keeping faithful unto death. This is about direction not perfection!
(Transition) there is a crown to receive (ref: Rev2:10) for those who are faithful, but we are not done, but getting closer, for there are promises to receive, as just mentioned on a crown.
Promises to receive
Promises to receive
Forgiveness of sins (Act2:38)
Forgiveness of sins by Gods grace through Faith (Eph1:7; Eph2:8)
Gift of eternal life in Christ, for wages of sin is death, but wait that is promise but look at this verse with me (turn to Rom6:23)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Gift of the Holy Spirit
When sins forgiven (Act2:38-39; that comes after Jn7:37-39)
Children of God receive and enjoy the blessings of the Holy Spirit ( Gal4:6, 5:22-23)
To be a part of the family of God.
Where we get to be a part of a family that’s been born again with many brothers and sisters (ref: Mk10:28-30)
Part of the family of God, which is the church (1Tim3:15)
Part of the family of God that encourages one another to remain faithful (Heb3:12-14)
Have you heard, responded to the simple gospel?
