Title: Depart from Me, I Never Knew You
Introduction
Introduction
1. Welcome
• Welcome: Tonight, we continue our series on the warnings of Jesus, focusing on one of His most sobering statements: “Depart from me, I never knew you.”
2. Why This Study Matters
• Many believe they are saved simply because they profess Christ or perform religious acts.
• Jesus warns that not everyone who calls Him “Lord” will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
• This study will answer:
• Who are the people Jesus is talking about?
• Why does He reject them?
• How can we ensure that we truly know Jesus?
3. Key Passage: Matthew 7:21-23
• This passage is part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where He warns about true and false discipleship.
• We will compare this passage with other warnings in Scripture to see how we can avoid deception.
Part I: Not Everyone Who Calls Him ‘Lord’ Will Enter (Matthew 7:21-23)
Part I: Not Everyone Who Calls Him ‘Lord’ Will Enter (Matthew 7:21-23)
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
1. Mere Profession of Faith is Not Enough
1. Mere Profession of Faith is Not Enough
• Many people acknowledge Jesus as Lord but are not submitted to His will.
• Saying “Lord, Lord” indicates a recognition of authority—but recognition is not the same as obedience.
• Luke 6:46 (KJV): “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”
Parallel Scriptures:
Parallel Scriptures:
• James 2:19 – Even demons believe in God but do not obey Him.
• Titus 1:16 – Some profess God but deny Him by their actions.
• 1 John 2:3-4 – “Hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”
Application: True faith is not just saying the right words—it requires a life of obedience.
Part II: False Works and Self-Deception (Matthew 7:22)
Part II: False Works and Self-Deception (Matthew 7:22)
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
1. Religious Works Do Not Guarantee Salvation
1. Religious Works Do Not Guarantee Salvation
• These people performed miracles, prophesied, and cast out demons—yet Jesus rejects them.
• Why? They had outward signs of faith but lacked an actual relationship with Jesus.
Parallel Scriptures:
Parallel Scriptures:
• 1 Samuel 15:22 – Obedience is better than sacrifice.
• Isaiah 29:13 – People honor God with their lips, but their hearts are far from Him.
• 2 Timothy 3:5 – Some have “a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof.”
Application: Good works without true obedience mean nothing in the eyes of God.
Part III: The Final Judgment – “I Never Knew You” (Matthew 7:23)
Part III: The Final Judgment – “I Never Knew You” (Matthew 7:23)
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
1. What Does “I Never Knew You” Mean?
1. What Does “I Never Knew You” Mean?
• “Knew” in this context refers to intimate relationship.
• Jesus is saying: “You were never truly mine.”
• 1 John 3:6 (KJV): “Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.”
Parallel Scriptures:
Parallel Scriptures:
• John 10:27 – Jesus’ sheep hear His voice and follow Him.
• Hosea 4:6 – “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
2. Depart from Me – A Final and Eternal Judgment
2. Depart from Me – A Final and Eternal Judgment
• This phrase is the same language used for the wicked in final judgment.
• Matthew 25:41 (KJV): “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire.”
• Psalm 6:8 (KJV): “Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.”
Application: The worst thing to hear on Judgment Day is Jesus rejecting you because you never truly belonged to Him.
Part IV: How Can We Be Sure We Truly Know Christ?
Part IV: How Can We Be Sure We Truly Know Christ?
1. Obey His Will
• John 14:15 (KJV): “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
• A true disciple follows Christ’s commands, not just hears them.
2. Live in Holiness and Repentance
• 1 John 1:6 (KJV): “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie.”
• A person who knows Jesus does not live in sin continuously.
3. Be Transformed by the Holy Spirit
• Romans 8:9 (KJV): “Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
• The Holy Spirit changes a person’s life, making them truly born again.
4. Bear Good Fruit
• Matthew 7:16 (KJV): “Ye shall know them by their fruits.”
• A true believer produces righteous actions that reflect Christ.
