Introduction:
Good morning, Everyone, it is good to be able to come to worship this wonderful morning. Last week we discussed the emotions of Jealously, and Anger. we also talk about how these two emotions left alone can cause problems within our physical, and spiritual life. This week we are kind of continue with the kind of the same theme here but this week we are looking at having self control of our desires. For this week we are going to be looking at Adultery, and Lust. Our first point would be defining both of these words, our second point for today would be how do they effect the Christians body and life, and finally the consequence of Adultery and Lust. Let’s go ahead turn in our main Passage for today. Lets turn in our Bibles to Mt 5:27-30
27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Defining Lust and Adultery:
Defining Lust and Adultery:
From this passage we come see that Christ from our main passage is trying to warn early believers to have self control over their lust. The first word we’ll be defining today will be Lust. Lust means to desire over something, wanting something. Today, the world try’s and makes everything desirable for mankind. Even we as Christians struggle with this trap that world set for many. From our main passage here in Mt 5, we see that Christ is warning about having control over our thoughts here, our thought could lead us to act upon these desires, if we are not careful. In today’s world people seek out attention, people of the world lust after affection. its all about themselves. The world of today had set trap for mankind, that it is okay to chase after things that make you happy. I mention a quote when i first started preaching here in Beaver, if you all remember this quote, a buddy of mine sent me a while back. The do what makes you happen culture is toxic for us as Christians, because we are not here to do what makes us happy but to sever God, and Christ. Our lustful desires of things that are within the world would lead us to being unfaithful, and astray from God, in which would make us as Christian to be Adulterous people of the world. Which leads us to our next term which is Adultery, which means cheating in some form or fashion. from sexual pleasures here on Earth to putting things before God, and Christ. Let’s turn in our Bibles to Jer 23:13-15
13 “And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria:
They prophesied by Baal
And caused My people Israel to err.
14 Also I have seen a horrible thing in the prophets of Jerusalem:
They commit adultery and walk in lies;
They also strengthen the hands of evildoers,
So that no one turns back from his wickedness.
All of them are like Sodom to Me,
And her inhabitants like Gomorrah.
15 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:
‘Behold, I will feed them with wormwood,
And make them drink the water of gall;
For from the prophets of Jerusalem
Profaneness has gone out into all the land.’ ”
From this passage, here in book of Jeremiah, Jeremiah is calling the people of Israel out because they had lust after the things of land, and of the inhabitants of the land, from this passage we come to see the even the Prophets of Jerusalem were also chasing after their own lustful desire, which lead the people of Israel to sin against, to forsake, and to reject God. This leads to our next point for today. The Problems of Lust and Adultery.
The Problems of Lust and Adultery:
The Problems of Lust and Adultery:
Now that we understand both terms with in the context of Scripture we also come to understand that they mean both world desire and sexual desire within this world we must be careful on how we think, because if the desire is strong enough we will eventually act upon the desire, a perfect example would be King David and Bathsheba in 2nd Sam 11. we see that King David who is not leading his men at the battle field during the time of war. we also see that King David was at home living a living a comfortable life at home, because of this comfort we see that David notice a beautiful women bathing, and desire for her. David acted upon his lust for another man wife, thus we see David commited Adultery. Because this David allow this lustful action take control and not by having self Control, David fell down a spiral of sinful decision in 2nd Samuel 11-12. First off David requested Bathsheba husband to return home in order to cover up his sin, by trying to convince Uriah, that he need to go home and enjoy his time off from the Battle field. we come to see that Uriah refuses to go to the comforts of home, but suggest that he returns to Battle, because of his brother in arms who are still fighting. we see the response from David who tells to stay home for at least one night, but Uriah sleeps at kings door for the very night. David gets impatient, try’s to get Uriah drunk and send him home, but Uriah refuses to go. finally David releases Uriah back to the Battle with note in hand of his own death sentence. Throughout this story in 2nd Sam 11, David had fallen into a trap of lustful desire, because of this desire it eventually cause problems for David, and the people of Isreal. another thing to think about is how we as Christian need self control because everyday we all fall into this kind of trap set by the world. Lets turn in our Bibles to Pro 11:5-8
5 The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way aright,
But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright will deliver them,
But the unfaithful will be caught by their lust.
7 When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish,
And the hope of the unjust perishes.
8 The righteous is delivered from trouble,
And it comes to the wicked instead.
From these three verse here within the book of Proverbs we see that the Author is right about the wisdom of God how God want his people to pay attention to details of how to live their life here on Earth. It really comes down to how we act upon our desire with in this life. are we going to live a life a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. Let’s turn in our Bibles to Rom 6:15-17
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
From this passage here within Letter to the early Church in Rome, Paul writes about how we have a Choice here within our life. How we act upon these Choices within our life here on Earth will reflect when we come to the throne of God. The Choices are, Are we going to act upon our lustful desires and become slaves of sin or Are we going to submit ourselves to the obedience of God, and Christ which lead to eternal life. We can also go back couple of verse here in Romans 6:11-13
11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
We again see that Paul really hits home about how if we act upon our own lustful desires we fall into despair of world consequences, and spiritual consequences. Not only the new Testament believers struggle with lustful and adulterous problems there are many others who have fallen into the trap of lust and adultery. It really comes back to our main passage that we must recognize lustful desire over what is godly. Which leads to our last point for today.
Consequences, and how do we overcome our lustful and Adulterous nature:
Consequences, and how do we overcome our lustful and Adulterous nature:
Now let head back to our main passage in Mt 5:27-30
27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Now we look at verse 28-30 we see the consequence, just having sexual lustful thought, Christ is warn all Christians about how we think. Remember as a Christian we are love God with all heart, with all our mind, and with all our soul. Mt 22:37
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
From this perspective, we as Christians must be careful in what we think, we should be thinking about sexual pleasures, and things of the world for our own desires, we also understand that we as Christians need to have self control over our very thoughts. we come to understand our thought direct our actions within this life. Not only if we continue to allow ourselves to continue in ways of lust and adultery, God will not have any thing to anything to do with us, leave us to in our desire, Let us turn in our Bibles to Rom 1:24-28
24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;
From this passage here in the letter to the early Church in Rome, Paul really hits a hard point for those in Rome. we see that Paul explains how God had given up on men who refuse the true of him and Jesus Christ to their lust of their hearts. because of this lust which leads to acting upon Adulterous motivations . Which we as Christian understand that from sexual pleasure to placing things before God, and Christ. we also understand that because of this kind of thinking would put even all Christians in danger of hell fire, Eternal punishment. Now if we really focus on the last part of Mt 5:29-30
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
with this two verse here what does Christ mean by This, well its very simple, Christ is basically stating that we should no longer willing to live in sin, even Paul had to deal with this with early church in Rome. Lets turn in our Bibles to Rom 6:1-4
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
From this passage here in the letter to the early Church of Rome, we see that Paul was dealing with Christians who thought if they continue to live in sin, then they would receive more grace from God. Even today we as Christians still struggle with this, because when comes down to making a decision we should weight it like this, Is it pleasing to God, is it godly, is it doing the will of God, if it does not fall under these things then it would fall under as being sinful. at the end of the day if we continue to live a sinful life, and reject the true about God, we are separating ourselves from God. we have no one to blame but ourselves. in order to overcome our desires, we must recognize that we need God, and Christ in our lives, not only that but we must study the scriptures in order to grow, and mature as children of God. we will be known by our fruits back Mt 7:15-20 which leads to are we bearing Good fruits or are we bearing bad fruit. As Christians if we do the things that are pleasing to God, then we eventually bear the fruits of the spirit in Gal 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
we acquire these thing, and mature as Christians. if you notice that Self control is one of these fruits. from this we come to understand by having self control over our thought, we can make reasonable decisions on what is Godly and what is sinful.
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
