Humility
1 Peter 5:1–11 “So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
What is humility?
Not thinking of yourself AS less, but thinking of yourself less OFTEN.
Sweet, but HOW do I do this?
Try thinking about God more.
Pray.
Read the Bible
Try thinking of others more.
Ask them how they are doing.
Listen.
Having a correct view of yourself in light of God.
When you do view yourself, having the proper prospective.
Think of a pool ball on a billiards table.
Cracking the guitar.
The view from the ball is that the ground is not moving, but everything else is spinning out of control.
The view from the table is that everything isn’t moving, but the ball is rolling across the table.
Which is correct? Both! Which represents what is happening more correctly? The second.
You can have views that are technically “correct”, but are they most helpful?
What does it look like to be a humble leader?
Don’t take on more than you need to.
1 Peter 5:2 “shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight…”
If God has given you responsibilities, be present. Don’t be chasing after other sheep. Don’t make it a TOP priority to get more sheep, instead try to make your sheep strong and healthy.
Be willing to lead.
“…not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you…”
“I don’t want to…” “I rather be doing something else…” “Fine, I’ll do it, even though it is an inconvenience…”
“I am willing to surrender my wants and desires to you. I am willing to surrender my time, and even my life to you.”
What is your motivation? Who are you doing it for?
“…not for shameful gain, but eagerly…”
Paul was a great example. He went to prison, and people who didn’t like him “Took advantage” of it and was sharing the gospel to shame him.
They were doing it for the wrong reasons. But Paul was happy that the gospel was being shared, which shows he was doing it for the right reasons.
Most of you won’t be Pastors preaching before thousands. But all of you will have opportunities to share the gospel to at least 1 person who won’t remember your name.
Not a Dictator, but a servant leader.
“…not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock…”
“You serve me” mindset.
Jesus is our example of a servant leader.
What does it look like to be a humble follower?
1 Peter 5:5 “Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.””
You might be thinking, great, and when I get in a leadership position, I will totally do that. Well, there is something for those who don’t have that opportunity.
Think about what youth group would be like if everyone had humility.
Being honest when they get out in Gagaball
Being willing to have others be included in games
Welcoming new people and including them when it’s an inconvenience.
When you share in group time, trying to be short so others can speak.
Listening when others talk, not just hearing.
I want to take this opportunity to talk about some serve opportunities.
