2 Peter 3:1-18
2 Peter 3:1-18
Peter was writing to a group of people who were under immense pressure in life. He wrote as a loving and caring pastor, but didn’t pull any punches in what he said, stirring them up in the Spirit.

+ he wanted them to be sober-minded in their understanding.

Be aware, scoffers gonna scoff (2 Pt. 3:2-5).
Be aware, scoffers gonna scoff (2 Pt. 3:2-5).
2 so that you recall the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles. 3 Above all, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days scoffing and following their own evil desires, 4 saying, “Where is his ‘coming’ that he promised? Ever since our ancestors fell asleep, all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.” 5 They deliberately overlook this: By the word of God the heavens came into being long ago and the earth was brought about from water and through water.
Prov 3:34 -He mocks those who mock but gives grace to the humble.
Prov 1:22 - “How long, inexperienced ones, will you love ignorance? How long will you mockers enjoy mocking and you fools hate knowledge?
Prov 13:1 - A wise son responds to his father’s discipline, but a mocker doesn’t listen to rebuke.
Prov 9:7–8 — The one who corrects a mocker will bring abuse on himself; the one who rebukes the wicked will get hurt. Don’t rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke the wise, and he will love you.
Ps 1:1 — How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers!
Jude 18 — They told you, “In the end time there will be scoffers living according to their own ungodly desires.”
Prov 19:29 — Judgments are prepared for mockers, and beatings for the backs of fools.
Prov 22:10 — Drive out a mocker, and conflict goes too; then quarreling and dishonor will cease.
2 Tim 3:1–5 — But know this: Hard times will come in the last days. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, demeaning, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people.
Isa 29:20 — For the ruthless one will vanish, the scorner will disappear, and all those who lie in wait with evil intent will be killed—
Prov 21:24 — The arrogant and proud person, named “Mocker,” acts with excessive arrogance.
The God they scoff, will have the last word.
they mock and ridicule…its a straw man emotional argument that is the scoffers way (vs4)
A straw man argument is a logical fallacy where someone misrepresents or oversimplifies another person’s argument in order to make it easier to attack or refute.
Instead of addressing the actual position, the person sets up a “straw man” — a distorted or exaggerated version of the argument — and then knocks it down.
Example: Person A: “We should have stricter regulations on industrial pollution to protect the environment.” Person B: “Person A wants to shut down all factories and put everyone out of work!”
“oh, God’s coming back “SOOOON” to bring judgement and make the world new? Oh ya, okaaaaay..creation has been the same since grandpa was alive…that aint soon”.
God moves slow, but the King will return soon (2Pt. 3:8-10).
God moves slow, but the King will return soon (2Pt. 3:8-10).
8 Dear friends, don’t overlook this one fact: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed.
delay: hesitate. God’s slowness is an unhurried or restrained pace, not a limited pace.
day = 1k
day = an “age” (vs 18)
God examines and weighs the full scope of our life, not just a single bad moment (think parable of stewards). God is patient and greatest desire is we come to repentance. God initiates, we respond…
The Day of the LORD WILLL come to bring RENEWAL.
Revelation 21:1–5 “1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 I also saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. 3 Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. 5 Then the one seated on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new.” He also said, “Write, because these words are faithful and true.””
Biblical writers and prophets continually point toward Jesus’ second advent. Initiating judgement and the New Creation reality, where the physical realm and spiritual realm are no longer severed by evil, but once again unveiled with purity and permanence, and where God is again among creation.
Until He returns to renew all things, we grow in loyalty and wholeness (2 Pt. 3:11-18).
Until He returns to renew all things, we grow in loyalty and wholeness (2 Pt. 3:11-18).
active waiting, not idle waiting….
We await and we hasten the Day of the Lord…
2 Peter 3:11–13 “11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness 12 as you wait for the day of God and hasten its coming. Because of that day, the heavens will be dissolved with fire and the elements will melt with heat. 13 But based on his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”
+ Spirit and Bride say “come, Lord, Jesus”
+ we bring renewal to our wold, sharing gospel and being true witnesses to King Jesus…
+ God is waiting for people to repent.. so model repentant lives.
+ Dont be a scoffer, be soft hearted and quick to repent.
5 POSSIBLE WAYS WE WAIT.
Lawless - live however with no regard for judgement or surrender.
Lazy - (slothful; faith without works)
3. Legalistic - actions that are void of trusting relationship to God.
4. Loyalty — make every effort to grow in wholeness & holiness.
14 Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found without spot or blemish in his sight, at peace. 15 Also, regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our dear brother Paul has written to you according to the wisdom given to him. 16 He speaks about these things in all his letters. There are some things hard to understand in them. The untaught and unstable will twist them to their own destruction, as they also do with the rest of the Scriptures. 17 Therefore, dear friends, since you know this in advance, be on your guard, so that you are not led away by the error of lawless people and fall from your own stable position. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.
Loyalty is cultivated through God’s word.
KEEP MEDITATING ON GOD’S WORD. (v2-3)..Psalm 1 says it how we don’t get trapped by mockers
inspire imagination, which is the incubator of our faith
kids learn this way…

Talk it Over (being honest & open with friends, a spouse, or your Group)
The message was about looking and living toward the return of King Jesus. What is one idea from Sunday’s message that impacted you?
Read 2 Peter 3 aloud. What are som truths you observe about God and the life of the Believer?
How does the concept of time in relation to God ('with the Lord one day is like a thousand years') challenge our understanding of His promises? Why is it important to recognize that God’s timing is different from our own?
How does understanding God's patience help us in our personal spiritual journeys?
How can you practice being 'loyal' in your faith as you wait for Jesus' return? According to 2 Peter 3:11-13, what type of conduct should believers exhibit while they wait for the Day of the Lord?
Read Revelation 21:1-5. What description are you most drawn toward and why?
