Text: Psalm 107:17–22
Psalm 107:17–22 KJV
17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. 18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. 19 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. 20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. 21 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! 22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
Central Idea of the Text (CIT): The Psalmist described foolish individuals who suffered greatly due to their rebellion but experienced healing and deliverance after crying out to God, leading them to express thankful and joyful praise.
Proposition: When you sincerely cry out to God in your distress, He responds mercifully, heals your brokenness, and transforms your despair into joyful thanksgiving.
Statement of Purpose:
Major Objective (MO): Consecrative (encouraging hearers to commit to genuine, joyful gratitude and public testimony).
Specific Objective (SO): I want my hearers to sincerely cry out to God in their troubles and commit to joyful, public praise for His deliverance.
Structural Pattern: Problem-Solution
INFORMAL ELEMENTS / RHETORICAL DATA
Introduction:

Facing Our Own Brokenness

Life Material (L.M.): Have you ever felt trapped by your own decisions, overwhelmed by the painful consequences, and convinced there's no way out? Perhaps your choices have left you wounded, isolated, or feeling hopeless.
Life Issue (L.I.): What can we do when our own foolish choices have plunged us into despair?
Progression:

The Cost of Ignoring Wisdom

Life Material (L.M.): Think of a time when you disregarded wise counsel and suffered as a result—damaged relationships, lost opportunities, or even health issues. Recognizing the consequences of our rebellion can be profoundly painful.
Tentative Resolution (T.R.): We may attempt to ignore our problems or hide from God, believing we deserve our pain or thinking relief is impossible.
Transitional Sentence (T.S.): But what if the very One we’ve rebelled against is actually the only One who can truly heal us?
Turning Point:

Crying Out to the Healer

Life Material (L.M.): Imagine a critically ill patient stubbornly resisting medical help until, in desperation, they finally cry out. Immediately, the doctor provides exactly the care needed.
Biblical Material (EXP.): The Psalmist described a similar scenario—individuals suffering deeply because of their rebellion who cried out to God. God immediately responded, sending His powerful word to heal and deliver them completely (vv. 19–20).
Psalm 107:17–20 KJV
17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. 18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. 19 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. 20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
Tentative Resolution (T.R.): Maybe you wonder if God’s deliverance is truly meant for you. Perhaps you question your worthiness to receive such mercy.
Transitional Sentence (T.S.): Yet, the Psalmist insists that God's mercy far surpasses our doubts and fears.
Climax:

Responding with Joyful Praise

Life Material (L.M.): Consider a person dramatically rescued from imminent death. Their immediate reaction is often overflowing gratitude—a joy so great they cannot keep silent, eagerly sharing their story with others.
Biblical Material (EXP.): Psalm 107 encourages exactly this response: to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and publicly proclaim the wonderful acts of God (vv. 21–22).
Psalm 107:21–22 KJV
21 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! 22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
Final Resolution (F.R.): When you sincerely cry out to God from your brokenness, He graciously heals and restores you. Your natural and heartfelt response should be grateful, joyful praise, publicly declaring God’s merciful deliverance.
Conclusion:

Your Life as a Testimony

Recognize today that God hears your cry and can heal your deepest wounds. Don’t remain silent. Let your life become a vibrant testimony of thanksgiving, inspiring others to discover the same grace you’ve experienced.
