Trust and obey
Trust and obey
You know the song, trust and obey for there is no other way. Today we are looking at obeying the gospel. Again, this series is focusing on proclaiming the gospel, defining it, sharing it so others may obey it and obey yourselves if you have not done so yet.
Gospel means “good news” or “good tidings.” There are things to believe.
Jesus is the Son of God whom the Father sent into the world that the world may be saved through Him.
Believe that Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day fulfilling scripture.
Believe that Jesus is both Lord, and Savior.
Believe that He is coming back again as scripture says to judge the world in righteousness.
There is an imperative that we must not only believe, but to obey the gospel message (Heb5:9)
9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
Obeying the gospel is the obedience of faith (Rom16:25-26)
25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, 26 but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith;
This obedience of faith comes from the heart (ref: Rom6:17)
Not obeying there is eternal destruction that awaits (2Th1:7-9
6 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
Have you obeyed the gospel?
Have you obeyed the gospel?
Believe the gospel Jesus wants all to hear (Mk16:15-16)
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
Believe the gospel which is the power of God unto salvation (ref: Rom1:16-17)
Do you believe the gospel, the good new, the glad tidings that Jesus wants all to hear and is the power of God unto salvation?
We must believe in Jesus
Believe He is God’s only begotten Son (ref: Jn3:16) and that He came to take away our sin (John 1:29)
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
The other side of not believing in Jesus, well let the scripture speak (Jn8:24)
24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
So, do you believe who Jesus is and that He died for your sins and the sins of the world? For those who believe, trust, obey the gospel?
Transition: Obeying the gospel, it is an act of faith. It is acknowledging our faith.
To confess our faith, confess with our mouth, Jesus as Lord (Rom10:9-10)
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
With that confession it is coupled with belief. Now it is more than just belief in Jesus, it is belief in His resurrection!
Is your faith sufficient to make this confession and have this belief?
Speaking of confession, it is a good confession (ref: 1Tim6:12-13) here it is before others, then in other case (Act8:37) it was a personal one. Jesus told us about confession too (Mt10:32)
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.
Have you made the good confession? For there is still more when it comes to obedience.
We are called to repent as Jesus called (Lk24:46-47)
46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
The apostles called for it (Act2:38, 3:19, 17:30)
For repentance is a change of mind (decision) change of direction (action) - it brings about godly sorrow, leading to salvation (ref: 2Cor7:9-11)
So, have you repented, have you turned from your ways, to accept God’s way?
Obedience is being baptized as commanded
Baptized for remission of sins (Act2:38) as commanded by Jesus (Mt28:19-20; Mk16:15-16)
Baptism is by immersion (baptizo) (ref: Act8:36) it is for the penitent believer (Act8:36-37)
36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
Baptism is burial (Rom6:3-4)
3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
Baptism is forgiveness of sins by the blood of Christ is made possible (ref: Eph1:7) it is where are sins are washed away (ref: Act22:16) it is where through God’s working, we are raised up with Christ (Col2:12-13
12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
Sorry, cannot stop there must read the next verse
14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Have you been baptized for the right reason?
It is not an expression of an inward change, it is the place that change takes place!
It is not a public confession of your faith, it is the place where God cuts away your sins and you are born again.
When the penitent believer raises up from the watery grave, all done by the grace of God received by your faith, then being born again to walk in the newness of life and learn to keep His commands (ref: Mt28:20) and learn to walk faithfully unto death (ref: Rev2:10).
Are you walking faithfully? Are you learning and keeping His commands? For there is a danger of apostasy.
Apostasy, a falling away (2Pt3:17
17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness,
if it were not possible, if it is OSAS, why is this verse here?
Why is there Heb3:12-14
12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,
God has called you to be faithful, he has even equipped you (ref: 2Pt1:3) He has given you His word. He has given you His Spirit, your part is to remain faithful. Remaining faithful comes with a decision and an action.
(Conclusion/Invitation)
Hear, believe, confess, repent, be baptized, be faithful.
God wants to meet all, His desire is all repent and be saved (1Tim2:3-4)
3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Have you obeyed the gospel, can you proclaim the gospel so others can be saved?
