INTRO—
INTRO—
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” — FDR (Great Depression)
“I’m your huckleberry.” — Doc Holliday (to Johnny Ringo, 2x)
“We shall never surrender.” — Churchill (1940; after the fall of France, etc.)
Challenging times put a super-focused spotlight…and enhanced impact…on what people—especially, people leading—say.
“FATHER, FORGIVE THEM, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.” [LUKE 23.32-34; K=34]
“FATHER, FORGIVE THEM, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.” [LUKE 23.32-34; K=34]
[TIMING: Early on the cross; with the third hour (9 o’clock hour)]
Luke 23:32–33 “Two others—criminals—were also led away to be executed with him. When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.”
Luke 23:34 “Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided his clothes and cast lots.”
Jesus did what [[he said…and]] taught other they should do (Matthew 5.43-48). [What if instead he’d said, “You’re a Gentile…Roman…Soldier…Pagan. You don’t deserve forgiveness”?
ALSO, OT PROPHETIC FULFILLMENT:
Psalm 22:18 “They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.” (Further context = vv. 1, 7-8, 15, 17)
**Luke 23.34 = Compassionate Forgiveness**
“TRULY I TELL YOU, TODAY YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.” [LUKE 23.35-43; K=43]
“TRULY I TELL YOU, TODAY YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.” [LUKE 23.35-43; K=43]
[TIMING: Moments […minutes, an hour?…] after Jesus’ first statement from the cross]
Luke 23:39–40 “Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other answered, rebuking him: “Don’t you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment?”
[One Thief’s Response]
Luke 23:41 “We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.””
[Clearly consistent with a repentant heart.]
[One Thief’s Request]
Luke 23:42 “Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.””
[What was (might’ve been) his expectation (hope) when making this request? What reason did he have for ANY hope?]
Luke 23:43 “And he said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.””
[To the repentant thief’s request, Jesus gives a clear—and unexpectedly amazing—response!] [[Paradise=Heaven; no holding place, etc.]]
“Oh to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!”
**Luke 23.43 = Compassionate Grace**
“WOMAN, HERE IS YOUR SON. … HERE IS YOUR MOTHER.” [JOHN 19.25-27; K=26b, 27a]
“WOMAN, HERE IS YOUR SON. … HERE IS YOUR MOTHER.” [JOHN 19.25-27; K=26b, 27a]
[TIMING: (Uncertain; ) may be the latter part of Jesus’ first three hours on the cross (10 o’clock-ish hour)]
John 19:28 “After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.”” [Context immediately following these verses in John’s Gospel account.]
John 19:25 “Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.”
John 19:26–27 “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.”
From the cross—John tells us that Jesus saw him…and he saw his mother, Mary. Something about how she looked…
Luke 2:34–35 “Then Simeon blessed them and told his mother Mary, “Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed—and a sword will pierce your own soul—that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.””
…moved (stirred) him [compassion, empathy, sympathy]
He fulfilled the duty of a first-born son to care for his mother in the absence of his father (Joseph) [[Caring…Jesus cared very well for his mother…]]
**John 19.26-27 = Compassionate Care**
CONCL—
CONCL—
The importance of studying Jesus’ statements about or on the cross…
…is not just about “what” Jesus said…
…the “why” Jesus said it is also quite important.
Isaiah 53:12 “Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, because he willingly submitted to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.”
JESUS — has left us an example that we should follow in his steps, AND…
he has made it possible for us to be able to follow in his steps.
INVITATION:
Salvation
Compassion (amid disrespect [that’s putting it mildly]…forgiveness, grace, & care)
[[My quarter-zip pullover for Bennett]]
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
