Opening Song:
God So Loved The World

Passover

vs 1
Pascha - from pesach - to pass over, spare.
The great sacrifice and festival of the Jews which was instituted in commemoration of God’s sparing the Jews when He destroyed the firstborn of the Egyptians.
Egypt
how did God fight for us? On the cross.
At The Cross

Agapao

vs. 1
To esteem, love, indicating a direction of the will and finding one’s joy in someone.
Choosing to find one’s joy in someone.
He wants to find His joy in us and so He chooses to do what is necessary to make that a reality.

To The End

All of the love that Christ has. He was emptying out His love tank on us. Love lavished upon us.
To the stated goal. Not leaving anything undone or unfinished.
Completely. There is nothing more to add.
But before the cross, the feet need washed.

Feet Need Washed

The other Gospel writers do not mention this part of the Last Supper, and John does not mention the elements of the Last Supper being disbursed.
Why did John focus on this rather than the others?
I have a couple theories.
The other Gospels were written earlier and John wanted to emphasize something they missed.
John's Gospel as a whole emphasizes the deity of Christ and this pre-cross example of servitude is very powerful.
The King stooping down to the lowest of servants.
He is setting the stage for Jesus’ other teaching.
John 15:12–13 NASB95
“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
John also emphasizes the love of God in his Gospel and his other letters. And this was a different demonstration of Jesus’ love.
Why did Jesus even do the foot washing in the first place?
I think for multiple reasons, but one I believe was to quash a debate.
Luke 22:23–24 NASB95
And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing. And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest.
vs. 10 - You are clean already, only your feet need to be washed.
has bathed - perfect passive participle. an action done in the past and which its effect continues in the present.
You are already forgiven of your sin, but you need to have a cleansing each day.
Your body is clean, but you have been walking around in the dirt and dung of the earth.
Wash your feet. Mom would always have me wash my feet before I went to bed.
Your house is clean, but it just needs a little dusting.
Your soul is clean, but it has gotten a little tarnished from the world. Let’s polish and shine it up.
Spurgeon:
Morning and Evening Morning, April 17

We are full of sin, but the Saviour bids us lift our eyes to him, and as we gaze upon his streaming wounds, each drop of blood, as it falls, cries, “It is finished; I have made an end of sin; I have brought in everlasting righteousness.”

Morning and Evening Morning, April 17

Oh! sweet language of the precious blood of Jesus! If you have come to that blood once, you will come to it constantly. Your life will be “Looking unto Jesus.” Your whole conduct will be epitomized in this—“To whom coming.”

Morning and Evening Morning, April 17

Not to whom I have come, but to whom I am always coming. If thou hast ever come to the blood of sprinkling, thou wilt feel thy need of coming to it every day. He who does not desire to wash in it every day, has never washed in it at all. The believer ever feels it to be his joy and privilege that there is still a fountain opened.

Morning and Evening Morning, April 17

Past experiences are doubtful food for Christians; a present coming to Christ alone can give us joy and comfort. This morning let us sprinkle our door-post fresh with blood, and then feast upon the Lamb, assured that the destroying angel must pass us by.

The Example

vs. 14-15
Foot Washing - I have set an example that you should do as I did to you.
The goal of the learner is to become like the master.
We are to wash one another’s feet.
Literally, sure, but this is more of a soul issue.
We are to dust and polish one another’s souls.
Accountability
Encouragement
Exhortation
Prayer and Confession
James 5:16 NASB95
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
vs. 17
You are blessed if you do them.
Give and receive.
Accountability, encouragement, exhortation, prayer and confession.
vs. 27
We don’t know when Judas left to betray Jesus, but it was somewhere at this time and from Luke 22:21 it sounds like after Judas had taken the bread and wine.
But since this is the point in the narrative that Jesus broke bread with His disciples, so we’re going to pause now and do so ourselves.
His Mercy Is More

The Mandatum

vs. 34
Maundy - Mandatum - Mandate
A new commandment I give to you.
new - kainos - qualitative newness. Not known before.
Matthew 22:36–39 NASB95
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
Love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
Love is the one characteristic that Satan cannot counterfeit.
