The Resurrection (Gospel of Luke)
24:1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to
the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found
the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they
did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were
perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling
apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to
the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living
among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how
he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must
be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on
the third day rise.”
8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they
told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was
Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the
other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but
these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe
them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in,
he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at
what had happened.

The Denial of Death VS. The Demise of
Death
Human Nature’s Response
Christianity’s
Declaration
•“The knowledge of death is reflective and conceptual, and animals
are spared it. They live and disappear with the same
thoughtlessness: a few minutes of fear, a few seconds of anguish,
and it is over. But to live a whole lifetime with the fate of death
haunting one’s dreams… that’s something else.” ~ The Denial of
Death by Ernest Becker (1974 Pulitzer Winner)
•Sigmund Freud’s Anxiety versus Kierkegaard’s Understanding: An
Existential Problem of Faith
•Denial or Demise: Our beliefs and choice between these two not
only change the experience of Death, but also our present
experience of Life!
The Resurrection
24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the
tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the
stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did
not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed
about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.
5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the
ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among
the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told
you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be
delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the
third day rise.”
Remember!
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection. (Mark 8)
31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests
and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly.
Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection. (Mark 9)
30 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his
disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is
killed, after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.
Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time (Mark 10)
32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those
who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, we are
going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him
to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after
three days he will rise.”
John 10:17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.
18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I
have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” John
Remember His words and His actions…
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.[d] Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone
who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25)
I. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus[f] saw a commotion, people weeping and
wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping?
The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's
father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he
said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and
began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. (Mark
5)
II. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son
of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. 13 And when the
Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then he came up and touched the
bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 And the dead man sat up and
began to speak, and Jesus[d] gave him to his mother. (Luke 7)
III. 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had
died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to
them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” (John 11)
8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all
these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene
and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them
who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an
idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb;
stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went
home marveling at what had happened.
No Longer Confused and Heartbroken, but Comforted and
Overjoyed…
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among
them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and
frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are
you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands
and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have
flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he
showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for
joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”
42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[b] 43 and he took it and ate before
them.
No Longer Uncertain & Unguided, but
now Led & Unwavering
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still
with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets
and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the
Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and
on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of
sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of
my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on
high.”
The Ascension
50 And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.
51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.
52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were
continually in the temple blessing God.
The Result: Acts 4

“The fact that Jesus Christ died is more important than the fact that
I shall die, and the fact that Jesus Christ rose from the dead is the
sole ground of my hope that I, too, shall be raised on the Last Day.”
~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
In Christ Alone My Hope is Found
I.John 10: 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I
may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own
accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.
II. Luke 23: 46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands
I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.
III. John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes
in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in
me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
THE RESURRECTION’S IMPLICATION FOR EVERY
FOLLOWER OF CHRIST TODAY
I. Confusion is limited; His Peace surpasses all
understanding (Phil.4:7)
Misery and Sadness is momentary, joy and gladness is
eternal (Isaiah 35:10)
Uncertainty becomes minor, Hope is Unwavering and
Future Oriented (Revelation 21:4)
Death is not merely a physical or biological
problem, it is not an evolutionary problem,
nor a mental problem.
Above all it is a Spiritual Problem!
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift
of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23
“I am the Resurrection and
the Life.” ~ Jesus
