The Core of the Gospel

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NIV
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
Romans 1:16 NIV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

The Treadmill of Performance

Performance can be both exhilarating and crushing.
The worst part is that the glory of our successes is so often fleeting.
Think of some of the most exciting high points in your life. You have sweet memories of those moments but the feelings of those moments have unmistakably dimmed
But the memory and guilt of our failures never goes away.
Our failures linger in our memory and we tend to continuously beat up on ourselves resulting in defeated thinking
Self esteem is based on our performance and the opinions of others about our performance
By contrast our self worth (or value) is rooted in our creation in the image of God and our redemption by His Son

The Grace of the Gospel

Grace begins with our salvation - Ephesians 2:8-9

Ephesians 2:8–9 NIV
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

Grace continues as we become God’s workmanship - Ephesians 2:10

Ephesians 2:10 NIV
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Please be Patient, God is not Finished with Me Yet!

Grace is an empowering reality to the Christian - 2 Corinthians 12:9

2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
God’s grace is always sufficient
God’s grace is active empowerment

Grace empowers us for Godly living - Titus 2:11-13

Titus 2:11–14 NIV
For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Grace empowers the Christian’s mission - 2 Timothy 1:9

2 Timothy 1:9 NIV
He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

God’s grace empowers ministry - Acts 4:31-33

Acts 4:31–33 NIV
After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all
2 Peter 3:18 NIV
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
