I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed:
INTRO—
INTRO—
[We return to our study of 1 Peter…to find ourselves at his conclusion of his first letter.]
Departing words…words of encouragement…words by which to live.
Especially for persecuted, antagonized outsiders living the exile life!
ELDERS EXEMPLIFY [1 Peter 5.1-4]
ELDERS EXEMPLIFY [1 Peter 5.1-4]
[[Elders ARE TO Exemplify.]]
Elders and Elders (potential for either church leadership [overseer/pastors] or older members of the church(es)…or both/and.
SHEPHERD WILLINGLY (5.2a)
Shepherd ( = guard & guide; work at leading & overseeing)
Not from any external (forced) reason… [Relative wants you to; etc.]
But, willingly ( = an inward call, motivation)
WORK EAGERLY (5.2b)
…Not for greedy gain (status/pride; a ‘pay day’)
But, eagerly ( = similar to ‘willingly;’ money is not the foremost motivator)
TYPIFY FAITHFULLY (5.3)
…Not lording it over (not an oppressive force; excessive use of ‘authority’)
But, being an example ( = typify [show what is to be typically true of] a Christ-follower; show the day-to-day…story from Shawnee)
HUMILITY HONORED [1 Peter 5.5-7]
HUMILITY HONORED [1 Peter 5.5-7]
[[Humility IS TO BE Honored.]]
Humility is to be prized by us, because…((in just a moment— ‘it is prized by God’))
“In the same way…”
YOUNGER BE SUBJECT TO ELDERS (5.5a)
Younger (in age, in the faith) are called upon to be teachable…to be of such character/mind as to be led)…by elders (again, both).
SHOW HUMILITY TO EACH OTHER (5.5b)
Humility…be sure to dress yourself—Gk. phrase indicative of tying up the outer garment, especially as one serving someone else—what Peter saw Jesus do for him and the other disciples in the upper room when Jesus washed their feet.
Humility…to each other (young and old, pastor and member alike!)
GOD GRACES THE HUMBLE (5.5c-6)
God Honors Humility!
Proverbs 3:34 “He mocks those who mock but gives grace to the humble.” [[LXX: The Lord opposes the arrogant, but he gives the humble grace.]]
God Opposes the Proud.
God Exalts Properly…(5.6)
REMAIN RESOLUTE [1 Peter 5.8-11]
REMAIN RESOLUTE [1 Peter 5.8-11]
[[WE ARE TO Remain Resolute.]]
BE ALERT!! (5.8a)
Sober-minded (drunkenness as an illustration;) ‘awakenness!’
[[Can I just say…if you’re going to use the word ‘woke,’ use it like it is here and not like those in the world are using it to try to belittle and demonize people.]]
CS Lewis — two big mistakes we make regarding Satan: we joke about him (not sober assessment); and/or we ignore him (not watchful, on alert).
KNOW YOUR ADVERSARY. (5.8b)
A prowling lion (constantly moving; ‘walkabout;’ full of aggression; his intimidating bark)
A looking to devour lion (to swallow down; his insatiable bite)
KNOW THE PLAN. (5.9-11)
Resist him — Stand against; by…
Stand firm — Stand strong (unmoving, unwavering)
Remember you’re not alone!; and…
Trust God’s promise/plan (5.10-11)
