How can we give a proper defense if we don’t know who Jesus is?

It’s great to be here with you all this week and I am excited for what the Lord has for us over the next few days. I really do believe that for some of you, these next few days will be the most important days of your lives. Just to give you a little bit of background as to who I am, my name is Brady and currently I am the associate pastor of Crossroads Church down in Lillington, North Carolina. I’ve been married to my life Lora now for 9 years and we have two amazing kids: Benji who is 6 and Eden who will somehow be turning 3 next month. Before I moved to North Carolina, I was the youth pastor or associate pastor at Olive Branch Baptist Church over in La Crosse for 5 years so it is certainly nice to be back home and to be back here at Camp Concord with you all. I think that Camp Concord is an amazing place with a great heart for students and for the Lord so you are in good hands over these next few days. The way that I teach students is really the same way that I teach adults. Every single time that we gather we are going to dive deep into the Word of God and I really do believe that God can and will do amazing things through the Holy Spirit and the power of the Word of God. I’m sure that by now that you have heard that the theme for this week is “Always Ready” and that theme comes from one specific verse in the Bible from 1 Peter 3:15 which says, “but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;” The apostle Peter is not writing to every single person on the planet. No, he is writing specifically to Christians and we have a clear command that we are to always be ready. Specifically, we are to be ready to give a defense, to give a reason, for the hope that we have as Christians. We’ll talk more about this verse on Tuesday and the reason that we are waiting until then is because there is so much that we need to know, there is so much that we need our lives to be changed by before we can really give a reason for the hope that is in us. Make no mistake about it, the hope of the Christian is unlike the hope of any other person in the world. When the Bible talks about hope for a Christian, do you know what it is that makes it different from any other person’s hope? Because it’s certain. Most hope is a fingers crossed but the Christian’s hope is a thumbs up if that makes sense. Where does such certainty come from? It can only come from Jesus Christ and that is why tonight the very first thing that we are going to talk about is who Jesus is. Who is Jesus? Lots of people claim to know who Jesus is. Other religions claim to know who Jesus is. Here’s the thing though, I don’t care if you know about Jesus. What I care about is have you been born again? Has your life been utterly transformed by Jesus Christ? Has Jesus Christ taken you from the debts of your sin and given you new life through faith? That’s the Jesus that we all need to know and that is the Jesus that we will see in our first section of Scripture this week. If you have a Bible and hopefully you do, go ahead and turn with me to the book of Colossians and we will be looking at Colossians 1:13-20. While you are turning there, let me open us up in prayer.
Colossians 1:13–20 NASB95
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.
As we look at these verses, let me tell you where we will be going tonight. We are going to be looking at 4 things and they should be easy to remember because they all start with Jesus as the 1st word and the letter R in the second word. 1. Jesus Rescues. 2. Jesus Reveals. 3. Jesus Rules. 4. Jesus Reconciles.
