The Picture of the Flesh
The Picture of the Flesh
One final point about this story is that this is the last time we encounter an Amalekite or the tribe of the Amalekites mentioned in the time line of events (we do have a reference after and this is in ).
And by this point in Scripture if we’ve read from the beginning in Genesis we’ve probably begun to ascertain a few details about the Amalekites and what they are like.
Scripture paints them as a type of the flesh, let’s look at some of these characteristics:
Amalek attacked when Israel left Egypt (); the flesh doesn’t want us leaving the “comforts” of this life - even though our “comforts” were a burden! (, )
Amalek attacks the feeble/weak and weary (); the flesh is weak and weary (, , )
Amalek doesn’t fear God (); the flesh does not fear God (,).
God commands permanent state of war against Amalek (); God commands us to mortify the flesh ()
God promises to one day completely blot out the remembrance of Amalek (); God removes our sins when we confess and forsake them (, )
Amalek was once first and will be made last (); Christ desires that we don’t desire to be first ()
Amalek allies itself with other enemies in battle against God’s people (); the flesh has similar friends (, )
Using this picture, we see that Saul’s failure to deal with Amalek when God told him to ended in ruin, with an Amalekite delivering the death-blow. In the same way, when we fail to deal with the flesh as God prompts us, we can expect that area of the flesh to come back and deliver some deadly strikes. (Cuzik, David)

How are you acting like the flesh, like an Amalekite?
