Founded in relationship, principles of love, given for all time, exposing our unrighteous hearts.
(from Dallas Willard)
Even a fairly general practice of them [10 Commandments] would lead to a solution of almost every modern problem of meaning now facing Western societies.
God's best information on how to lead a basically decent human existence.
The Legalism is rooted in Relationship. Relationship precedes Rules. God as Savior and Redeemer precedes God as Law-giver.
Lens of Love – the 2 Greatest Commandments serve as a hermeneutic (interpretive lens) for the 10 commandments.
Matter of the heart – Jesus “reinterpreted” the law as a matter of the heart, but it always really was. What is the fundamental difference between murder and killing? Where does “envy” or “coveting” reside? Where does “honor for parents” reside? Jesus cut through all the posing and self-righteousness to expose us all as sinners before the law.
Exegete the medium – why do we consider the 10 Commandments special? Do we still consider them applicable today? God gave some laws verbally, for Moses to write down, to be kept beside the Ark of the Covenant. God gave 10 laws, written by his own finger, in stone, to be kept inside the Ark.
Paul – purpose of the law, to know we need help. Like a great experiment to exhaust every option of man trying to attain righteousness.
Under prophets
Every man for himself? (Judges)
Under divinely appointed Judges
Under popularly elected monarchy?
Under divinely appointed monarchy? (better, but still no win)
Scattered across the world?
Remnant, best of the best, starting from scratch?
As a persecuted rebellion
(Closest?) as a religious oligarchy backed by the most effective government of all time (Rome)

No other gods

God as a jealous God, and rightly so. This gets to the relationship that precedes and underlies the whole 10. You shall be my people, I shall be Your God. This relationship is exclusive.
Elohim – supernatural beings. Implicit recognition of other non-earthly beings. It isn’t that “other gods” aren’t real, it is that they are not to be worshipped, to be recognized for their place in the universe, whether admired or rejected, but only Yahweh alone is God.

No idols

Practical application of the above?
Practical restriction on worship: God is not worshipped as other gods are worshipped. We will always confuse the representation of a god (idol) with the God himself. If people can enshrine a pancake that looks like it has an image of the Virgin Mary on it, you can see the yearning of the human heart for something visible and tangible in place of wrestling and pursuing the real, invisible Person.
Curse that follows highlights God’s overwhelming love to generation, not curse of 3-4 generations.
Idols were (Guaranteed, selfish, easy, convenient, normal, and logical, pleasing to senses (art), indulgent, erotic)
People had personal, family and national gods. Thus does idol worship, in particular, pass through generations. One tends to worship the “gods of my father”. It is not so much the punishment of innocence as the continued pursuit of the estranged, even for generations.

Name in vain

Name signifies essence. Do not hijack the name, reputation and essence of Yahweh to prop up your own. I swear by Yahweh, I will do it. It is primarily using God’s name as a form of verbal manipulation. It also covers frivolous or disrespectful usage. Jesus reinforced and clarified (yes be yes, no be no)
Sorcery? Invoking God’s name to make something happen?
False prophecy! Speaking on behalf of God.
How about doing evil in the name of God. Cloaking hateful words and actions with the name of God.
What about the God of many names? Do all of them count? Yes, any word or name that invokes God’s reputation.

Sabbath

Requires most explanation. Not immediately obvious?

Honor father and mother

Murder

Adultery
