1 Corinthians 6:1–7 ESV
1 When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? 2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! 4 So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? 5 I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, 6 but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? 7 To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded?
1 Corinthians Exegesis and Exposition

“Having a case against another” (πρᾶγμα ἔχων πρὸς τὸν ἕτερον, pragma echōn pros ton heteron) is an idiom used for civil litigation

How do we handle a dispute within the church family?

We can handle it in a way that honors Christ.

We can handle it in a way that dismisses Christ.

We should deal with family matters within the church family.

Stephen Um in his Great Commentary on 1 Corinthians said it this way.
The church is to be God’s community that conducts its family affairs in ways that are not shaped by the brokenness of the culture.
The local church should be a place of justice.

It is an indictment on the church when believers turn to the world to get a fair shake.

1 Corinthians 6:1 (ESV)
1 When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints?
On the last day the church of Jesus Christ will be actively involved in rendering a verdict against the world.
The church will be entrusted with the task of judging eternal things.
Daniel 7:26 ESV
26 But the court shall sit in judgment, and his dominion shall be taken away, to be consumed and destroyed to the end.

If Christ entrusts us with matters of eternal judgment why would be bypass the church in ordinary life situations.

1 Corinthians 6:2–5 ESV
2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! 4 So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? 5 I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers,
I know it may not look like it all the time but there is much wisdom here.

The local church possesses a cross shaped wisdom the world knows nothing about.

When the church goes public with her private disputes it damages her witness.

1 Corinthians 6:6–7 ESV
6 but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? 7 To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded?
This is a loss for the kingdom!
When believers go public with their disputes even if you win the judgment you loose.

It is better to lose money and be wronged than to mar the reputation of the church.
